I have a problem with pinging and knocking. But first, let me give you some history. I bought a 78 F-100 Ranger from a buddy of mine 6 months ago. It was his father's and he got it from him when he died. He gave it to his son to drive in high school and he proceeded to rag it out. My buddy came home from Iraq for his son's graduation from high School 6 months ago and bought his son a new Ranger to take to college. He told me he was going to sell the old truck. I tried to talk him out of it but decided to buy it from him myself and fix it up. Fast forward 6 months later. He returned home from Iraq just this past Thursday Nov. 10. for good, thank God. The truck was awesome. I replaced a t-boned door, a bad fender, painted them to match, matched perfectly too. New bedliner, rims, coil springs, shocks, steering linkage, master cylinder, stereo, seat uphostery, exhaust, tune up. He couldn't believe how nice it is. I promised him if I ever sold it, he could have first refusal for what I have in it. I did most of the work myself, including the paint.
Back to the problem. The truck has 78,000 miles, factory air, a 302 ci automatic. It pings and knocks under light acceleration. I had the timing set to 9 degrees, replaced the cap, rotor, plugs and wires but it got worse. The old plugs were white and looking a little lean so I had the carb richened up. It is also a bear to start, if you give it any gas it floods. Other than that, it runs smooth as a sewing machine.
Changed the title. Sorry
I believe the mileage to be correct. It was used to pull an airstream trailer by my friends father. It has no valvetrain noise, blows no oil, and has never been rebuilt. It has a few leaks though.
