I was considering an engine swap and figured I'd go ahead and drop in a different tranny while I had it all apart. I use the truck for a lot of highway miles, and need the addition of a solid overdrive. I was planning on putting in a 460 from an older lincoln, and was looking for input on transmissions. I currently have in a 4 speed, and was thinking of switching to a 5 speed, or perhaps a six speed from a sports car. Has anyone ever heard of this being done, or ever tried it before? I don't need tons of low range gears, as I only occasionally use the truck for offroading, mostly for work, and occasional pulling. Thanks for all the help... I should probably add, its an '83 F-150 that came stock with a four speed and a 300-6.
whats the tranny in the lincoln?
It would be easy to use that one unless you have something against autos. I've had lots of luck with my c6 for all round usage. Ford used a few different 5 speeds that will mount up to your 460 that should be easy to find. If you do go with a 6 speed, not only will the tranny get spendy, you may need an adapter.
Assuming this is a 2wd and your not draggin, I would go with something that bolted right up. Also be prepared for beefin up the front for more weight, maybe stronger driveshafts and the rearend.
