i have a 79 4x4,400 manual.just got from parents.anyways i go to start vehicle and it just clicks.it was clicking from starter solenid.repalced it.still same thing.checked battery twice.both times were good, however they had to be charged to get reading.checked starter, good.checked alternator, read 10 which is bad.replaced alternator.drove vehicle around for 30 minutes hoping to charge system.came home, killed truck.tried to restart, clicking noise again and its trying to turn.note battery was sitting for 1 yr when i got truck.had to put water in battery.any suggestions.
the only way the truck starts is when i charge the battery and put it back into the truck.it sounds like the battery but when the truck doesnt turn over, headlights are bright, etc.it is an 840 amp battery??maybe there's juice for external electrical, not enough to turn over?
Just so you don't do the same thing I did, which was spend over $350 to replace your entire electrical system when it was a $7 part: Check your battery cables.
I know it sounds funny and honestly, if your battery sat for a year and needed water, it probably is your battery. But do check your cables. Mine had corroded about an inch from the battery terminals inside the insulation. It wasn't visible at all.
Do yourself a favor and go gank a battery from another vehicle (don't steal it ) and see if that solves your problem before you go spend the money on a new one.
I concur the battery is at fault.
Most times it will handle minimul drain like stereo but not all the current drain that the battery requires.
The only other thing it could possibly be is another bad starter solenoid, but I doubt it is that.
well guys,i broke down and bought the biggest battery from sears,900ca.put in truck and started it about 5-8 times, drove around and it still starts!!!!the engine is a newly rebuilt and i thing it is still tight.hope it works.oh yeah, also replaced back brakes, not too difficult.thanks for input.

Okay humor this suggestion....IF you should encounter this charging problem again I will bet it is the voltage regulator (well almost). The dumb regulator is mounted on the fender wall. Well the connection between the regulaor and the truck is CRITICAL. I have fixed this problem in over a dozen trucks. Remove the regulator and sand the back of it by the screw holes. Now sand the screw holes in the fender. Use bigger diameter screws to re-attach it. DONE!
The ground for the regulaor is critical. So now that you have all those new parts your in business.
A bad battery can be hard to diagnose. I agree with the earlier suggestion...REPLACE THE BATTERY...You can check the cables by doing "voltage drops" with a volt meter which is really easy, but totally out of line if you don't know how to use a voltmeter...which it sounds like you don't...not putting you down...just trying to keep up...
HERE TIS...any 12 volt american made charging system...make these measurements...you will need a digital voltmeter...
13.2 to 15.5 Volts DC
Less than .1 Volts AC
If you have the above you have a good alternator. If there is less DC voltage than above the alternator is not putting out.
If you have more than a tenth of a volt AC (.1) your rectifying diodes are shorted and are passing AC which is boo and hiss for a DC system.
Get it started and put a meter on it. Hope this helps.

i really saw no need to use the volt meter since i took my battery down to 2 different automotive shops, kragen and autozone.i live in ca.they both said battery was good???the battery may have charged for some time but it lost its charge pretty quickly.anyways, glad to be on the road.still need to fix power steering gear box leak.thanks again.
