64 F600 Cab Over Engine Mystery

Stargeezer here:

Just got a 64 cabover F600 to haul water. Original flat bed car hauler. VIN starts out C61Mblahblah. The M must be the engine code. I suspect a 391 - it's a V8 with front distributor and 2bbl. Two questions. Is it likely a 391 and what gasket sets will work for this engine? Also needs at least one hydraulic lifter. Will standard older 390 parts work in the top end? Thanks.

330 h.d.or 361 is what it should be.391 is the same but used in larger trucks.same lifters as any fe.390 etc.

Thanks Elder

Thanks for the quick info. Can get that click out of the valve train - otherwise seems like a good engine.

Thanks 390gashog

Yeah, I hear you - I've got one of those but an 89 460 - I think about half the power goes to pumping gas - well, it seems that way at the pump. Good news on the gaskets - same story from Elder Guy. I'm a believer. You guys are great. Thanks again.

I don't believe it's an FT series engine (331, 361, 391) in a '64. I believe those were introduced in '65.

hello; i believe it's a transplant. they didn't use an fe in trucks untill 65. it would have had a 262 6cyl. or a 292 y-block. well my book only goes up to 63 and there's no M code engine. possibly they came out with the 330 in 64, i'll have to check and see if i've got a later motor's manual, wayne.

Hello folks, I have a 64 F600 and the Ford 64 service manual, mine has the 330 HD 2BBl engine, "M" code in the vin number. The 361 and 391 are also listed, K and 9 code. Am in the process deciding how and what to fix on the beast. Wim

hi wim; they must have switched mid year, they were still using y-blocks in 64 in trucks. do they list the 302 or the 332 in your manual, probably not, wayne.

Lots of Help!!??

OK. Not totally confused but getting there. I like the idea of the 330 with the M engine code. This is a 22,000lb GVWR truck with an empty weight of about 10,000. It has a four speed with a two speed eaton rear end. Same question about parts - am I going to be able to use pretty much 390 FE parts in this engine except for the obvious, pistons, crank, etc. I have a top end gasket set (390) and just looking at the gaskets compared to where they go, looks pretty good. Won't know for sure until its too late of course. Any more good advice?

Thanks to all.
