I have the yellow coolant in my truck and need to add some. Can I mix the Shell ELC with the yellow? I know you cant mix it with the green, wasn't sure about the yellow though.

No, do not mix coolants. Go to Ford and get the same stuff.

This is an old thread, but if you read through the entire thing, you'll see that the cooling system holds a total of 8 gallons of coolant. Even if you drain the block, though, you won't get 100% of the coolant out which is why everyone recommends using 4 gallons of ELC after the flush and then top off with distilled water.

This thread has been a wealth of good information! I changed my thermostat today but fretted about doing so because I didn't know what my coolant was as it was colored more like ATF than any other coolant I've seen. As near as I can decipher the previous owner's notes it is about 75,000 miles old. It tests perfect with the test strips from NAPA. I'll find me a source for Rotella ELC tomorrow to replace what I lost during the thermostat replacement.

Given that or starting a new thread of "What coolant should I use?" for the 47th time, I give him credit for searching and finding the answer.

FYI - oldest thread I've ever seen resurrected was over 5 years old, and totally pointless, since it wasn't a tech/informational, but a "moment in time" thread. They need to add a "zombie smilie" to our choices.

Found my Rotella ELC at an Inland Truck Parts a few miles from me. Bought 4 gallons of concentrate in and 1 gallon of 50/50. The system was about 5-1/2 quarts low. I used the complete 50/50 gallon and then mixed another gallon of 50/50 in the 50/50 jug so I didn't have to label anything or rely on my memory. Next time I reach for a gallon of coolant it will be exactly what the label says.

This seems extremely elementary but as a kid we grew up with many partially filled containers in the garage that were abandoned because their contents was a mystery.

ELC in my opinion, is one of the top 3 modifications that all 7.3L owners should do to preserve engine life longevity.

Go CAT!
