Well after 10 years of trying to get a new Garage, it was delivered a few months ago. Slack I am. It is an American Barn type, Central building plus two side buildings. will have three phase 415 volt power, plus a 3 Phase genny
for when the power goes off. and an overhead crane to ease Engine removal.
I hear all about your Garages, all seem to be Monster's, 15 metres that way 20 that way. well this one is not so big, 10.5 by 11.0 metres. but with a second floor. should be big enough. this is a link to it.http://www.monaro.org/garage.htm
Yes, that will be a nice garage. Seems a little extreme for anything less then a full time business/service station. How did you get a 440v / 3 phase service to a residential address?
If you don't mind can you give us a ballpark estimate on the cost of the structure?
It's not 440V three phase. It is 415V three phase, just like he said.
He's in Australia, where household receptacles run at 240 volts. Their 415V three phase is the same concept as our 208V Wye three phase. You get 415 volts phase to phase, and 240 volts phase to neutral.
It is not uncommon to have three phase available on rural properties, for running pumps and other large motors. I have it here in Oregon.
Interesting, I heard that many countries other then the US have 220v as household power source. Something to do with lower amp ratings at 220V over 110v. Makes sense. Is their 220v the same frequency as the US current?
Three phase still confuses me. I know if you have two 110v conductors you get 220v but still in a single phase power source. So, how do you 440v or 415v three phase? It must not just add up like the 110v does.
Hi, Sorry I have not got back to you. the ballpark figure for the building, $13.000. aussie dollars. That includes a full length Mezzinine floor, rafters and beams, but no floor covering. yes the three phase is 415 volts, 60 cycles.
And it is a normal residence. They built Houses with single phase then went over to three phase then back to single phase. so I guess I was lucky. But most of my tools are three phase, welder/plasma cutter/Tig/wheel balancer/Compressor/Grinder/and the crane. I have a lot of progects, even a Gas turbine, I am restoring. Had a four car Garage, but I have outgrown it, so am building a better one.
I’m not sure what the Aussie dollar is valued compared to the US dollar. I would guess it’s closer to the English pound, which would make the cost more like $20K US dollars. That still does not seem too bad when you look at what your getting for it. Although, that does not include the foundation and floor cost.
Well I’m envious; please send some pictures of the completed project. Take care.
MTE: Looks like it will be a good sized garage when finished, I had to convert to feet/inches which came to appr. 34.5ftX36.1ft to get a better idea of size.
Is the second floor going to be a full size area(like for a living quarters) or like a low height area for storing things?
It works out out just over 17.000 US dollars. yes the second floor will be full height. for a home theater, and poolroom. yes will keep you informed how it is coming, will be doing it myself so it will take awhile.

Thats great, I wanted to do the same when I built my second garage, but the zoning laws wouldn't allow it in my neighborhood.

Thanks, I understand the taking awhile! If I tried to build anything today with lumber, the wood would go back to its natural state and have leaves sprouting on them before I got it done. Don't know where the time goes!
