HELP me DECIDE...99' F-150 OR 2002 Ranger
I have a 2002 Ranger (XLT, 4X4, Ext.cab, 4.0L) that I am thinking of trading straight to a 99' F-150 (XLT, 4X4, Ext.cab, 5.4L) what kind of problems are you having with either of them. What kind of fuel milage comes with each of them, and what are some Pros, Cons, and trouble spots with each of them... I NEED ALL THE HELP I CAN GET!!! Thanks Guys!!!!

Dude. I have to say that if I had a 4x4 Ranger and could trade it straight up for a 4x4 F-150, I'd jump at the chance. But, you gotta take into consideration all the factors. Miles, how was the F-150 treated by it's previous owner, is the Ranger still under warranty. And probably a couple other things. You are definitely going to take a huge hit in gas in going from a 4.0L six banger to the 5.4. That thing sucks the gas. BUTTTTT, the F-150 is wayyyyy cooler than the Ranger - in my opinion, especially if it's a 4x4. I drive a '99 F-150 ext. cab 4x4 with the 5.4L, 97,000 miles. Here is the list of problems I've had with mine:
replaced ball joints
replaced 1 ignition coil (almost everybody has to do this eventually it seems)
brakes are really squeaky - i think the rotors are warped.
transfer case shifter motor problems
Other than that, it's been a great truck man. I wouldn't trade it for anything. Except a brand new one just like it.

If you do have a warranty on the Ranger I wouldn't want to give that up.
I know from reading that you should check for oil leaks in the f150 on the left side front of the engine(drivers side) and right rear of engine (passangers side) between the block and head.
I have a 2001 with the 4.6 and I have the leak on the right side rear of the engine right above my starter.
This is a expensive fix, to replace the head gasket I've seen from $1500 up to $3000 for the repair.
Like I said I have the 4.6l but my gas mileage is better then I had in my 94 Ranger 4.0l . I get 17.5 mpg thats with about 80% highway and 20% city driving.
I dont know how good the 5.4 is.

99 vs ranger
Onthe 99f150.Pretty good truck. But check it out for these problems.Cold engine knock-Not that big of a deal.door cracks by the window-metal expands and cracks from window rolling up and down.Broken manifild bolts.Leaky head gasket.Leaky windshield-water leaks in through the window and drips down and frys you generic electronic module-this controls all your electrical stuff,$300 bucks or more to replace(look for rust under the dash on the drivers side)Odometer doesn't light up-cold solder joints gone bad-easy fix

Trading from 2002 Ranger to older 99 F150.... I don't know. Unless the 99 F150 is in "newer" condition such as lower miles, in better shape. 02 Ranger is obviously newer and you would get better trade-in value with newer vehicle (not necessarily brand new) but 2002 F150 or so. The gas mileage is only 2 miles per gallon better on Ranger, which is very minimal versus what you can do with F150 in term of hauling, towing, and roominess with F150.

scar98: Is the door crack by the window a serious problem? Mine has a small crack there, but I didn't think much of it.
I traded a 99 ranger with the 3.slow to go up to a 2000 f150 and i like the truck.. it definetly sucks gas, its harder to move around on the trails offroad - the ranger was perfect for that. It is faster with the 5.4. You have the 4.0.. suprisingly there are as quick or quicker than the 5.4 - my friend has an explorer with the 4.0 and he smokes me as soon as we hit 2nd gear, i do have big tires though.
The ranger handles better in the corners. The ranger was a lot smaller and cramped even with the supercab. I got the supercab on my f150 also which is really roomy as long as you're not trying to carry 6 adults.
One thing to look at is the crash test results for the f150 of that era - not impressive at all, the supercab is a death trap.
how many miles are on the ranger and the f150 you're considering?
anywayyy i'll stop yapping now,
good luck

I have a 98 F150 XLT 4X2 with a 5.4. If I did not need it to pull my travel trailer I would keep the ranger. I also have a 94 Aerostar AWD with a 4L with 180000 km (115000 miles). It still runs like new, never leaked oil, plug don't fly out, get 24 mpg (imperial). So unless you need the extra room and power keep the ranger. I still like my F150 very much.

Door crack
For the door crack not a big deal.I looked at getting my crack fixed and they wanted around a $1000 bucks. They have to take the door apart and weld it and then blend the paint into the rest of the truck. There is also an epoxy they can use to.I heard of people getting the crack fixed to only have it crack again. So i decided to fill the crack with white exterior silicone just so it doesn't rust.I'm happy with that decision.

THanks Guys... Keep em comming! My ranger has 91000miles, and the 150 has 72000. The 150 is in much better shape, as I have given mine hell! The Ranger is out of warranty, but the 150 has a 3yr, Unlimated milage warranty, so that is a no brainer. Other than mechanical problems, I am just worried about how it will perform. I am a Rescue Tech, and I drive a high rates of speed, and I am concerned with how it will handle and perform. I'll take all the advice I can get, and hopefully someone else can get something out of this as well. THanks Guys!!! Don't Stop Now!
