Last Wednesday my horse died - I have not used it very much the last three years but I needed to bring home a camper from the coast. It was acting funny on the way over - bucking and snorting on the grades. I though I had dirt and junk in my fuel filter - but it kept getting worse.
It got to where I had to back out of the throttle on the grades, and there would be a loud knock when I pushed it a bit. I though I had some carbon getting hot in a cylinder and causing detination.
Time I got to Morro Bay it was running very warm (not hot, but close). When I stopped with the nose pointed down a bit it was ok, but when the nose was level or pointed up the engine was smoking like I was spraying for bugs.
It is a 390 FE and I thought I had broke the rubber cups around the valve seals. I decided to leave the camper and limp home. I didn't make it - the engine kept getting worse and finally seezed about 40 miles from home.
Good old horse came home on the back of a damn Chev
Thanks - I ran a lot of gas through it already. I have a EFI 300 six with a C6 I was going to try in it "when I got around to it" - guess I will do it now.
Not as big a horse, but now a days I use it only when I think I might need the big brakes - no longer have to speed over the hills but still have to stop.
*****, sorry to hear about your bad day. Thats a good looking truck, I had a 69 F-250 that had the opposite color scheme but was about the same color. I loved that truck
Good lucking finding some new power for your ol' horse
You are right, $100 is cheap. My neighbor broke down last week about 75 miles from home on his way back from Reno. It cost him $400 to get it home. I like the idea about the 300. It's a great work engine. Good luck, Jag
I broke down once with a van (dangest thing, popped the bottom out of a lifter!) about 40 miles from home. After the horrendous quotes of 200.+ I got from wreckers to go get it and bring it home, I rented the smallest Uhaul truck that had a trailer hitch and a tow bar for the day, cost me ~ 75.00 total.
