what do you think?

i have the 4.9 i6 basically stock with a 3.5 rear end. auto tranny with overdrive. i want to put decent size tires on ole blue (thats my trucks name...anyone ever name their truck??). what is the biggest size tire i can go and still be reasonable. i know with the small rear end and non-high performance, too big of tires can really screw ya up. the truck is basically a daily driver but i want to be able to drive it through mud and trails and stuff......the reason i need the perfect size tire to get the best traction is i only have 2wd....which can be scary to take off road. to sum up, i need to go off road, keep traction, but not have too big of a tire that will diminish my power...what do you all think. is mudding with a 300 i6 in 2wd a bad idea or do some of you do it? thanks for the help.

You could do it but your terrain is going to be a bit more limited compared to a 4 wheel nissan 4 banger will put you to the test in some situations. Ive gotten mine stuck lots, but never had good tires and 3.08 gears, so put some 4.10s and go to the tire shop i guess. You also have a heavy front end so your front tires just anchor, especially in snow, with 2 wheel. You will ruin your suspension sooner too with smaller tires. These are all worst case scenerios in real rough terrain. Off roading on rough terrain is no problem but for that extra confidence you want to go 4X4 at least. Thats of course you want to sport it up a bit. But if your a hunter and want to put a moose in the back of gathering firewood or goin off the beaten path a two wheel drive will get you there and back no problem, good low end torque gives you an edge againt all those other 2 wheels.

I have a 1987 F-150 2wd lifted six inches in the front (Camburg Engineering 6 inch bent I-beams and coils with Camburg extended radius arms, stainless steel extended brake lines) and 35x12.50 mud terrains on American Racing 15x8 wheels. I have the 4.9 with a built C-6 and 3.55 gears with a TruTrac. My truck drives around with plenty of power and decent rpms on the freeway. My truck is built for the desert and works very well. Just be careful offroading and keep your speed up!
