3 speed on column w overdrive questions...

Hi guys,

Just trying to get some info for my dad. He's not very computer/internet savvy so i'm doing some legwork.

He's got a 68 F100 pickup. 360 Fe motor, but a tricked out 390 (from his previous F100 project) is going into the truck.

The question he has is pertaining to the 3 speed column manual with overdrive...

The number cast on the Tranny (actual its on a hangtag, similar to the tag on the rearends) is: C8T3AS-1. It is hanging from the bolt on the bottom of the second fork.

It's a SIDE LOADER transmission. And we're looking to get any and all relavent info/specs on the tranny. Gear ratios, Torque capacity, etc.

There are 2 electrical "pieces" associated with the tranny.
-One connects to the same gear the speedo is driven from-except on the passengers side at the back of the trans.
-The other is on the drivers side near the back of the case before the overdrive(what would be the tailshaft). This is an electrical motor/device similar in size and shape to a riding lawnmower starter...It goes into the tranny housing. At WOT this activates a solenoid switch at the firewall...but not sure what it is?

I can get pics but it will be a few weeks before that will happen (Thanksgiving probably)

Any info is appreciated. Thanks!
Philip K.

The governor will screw in, it allows you to go into OD above and out below a certain speed. On the left mounted with 2 bolts is the solenoid which engages and disengages a pawl, it is controlled by the governor. After you remove the 2 bolts rotate the housing 90 degrees then pull out of the box. I wouldn't hot rod that box as it will break and parts are getting rare.

Sorry, not a clue. Check the early 50's to 60's truck and car forum as that's the era of the box. That a BW T86 box with a R-11 or R-12 OD? The side can be plugged off then add a Jeep top shifter. Check also with a Jeep 4 x 4 shop for older like WW 2 up, not Jeep dealers. I was agressive in a Ramble American years ago with a hotted 6 that ate T-96 boxes and hurt T-86 boxes, both had OD's.

Lightning247: Search under my name, banjopicker66 for detailed informaion on the Warner T-85N overdrive transmission. I did a number of posts with detailed explanations on it. You may need to restrict the search to the '61 - '66 forumt though, as that is usually where I spend my time.
Good luck and post back with any questions.
