My truck [dark sider] was sold to me as a 1950 F2. The Vin number is 98RD401614 which matches the glove box plate.

I take it as a 49/50 truck
8 cyl
F2
unit number 401614

I am just curious as it is already titled in my state.

It's a solid 1950 F2 Jim. You have the other bits and pieces correct. Thanks for posting it.

The break between 49 and 50 is what we've been trying to establish with all this. The dividing point appears to be somewhere between 280,000 and 300,000.

We can't get closer than that due to:
1. incorrect reporting by some guys on ebay who see the 9 and assume it must mean 49.
2. All states title differently. Back then a truck wasn't processed thru the system of some states until it was sold, so a dealership could have an early 49 that didn't sell until late 1950 and it would be titled as a 50....even tho it had an early 49 serial number.

Hi Mike, let us know if you find a number on the firewall.

You know the basics - it used to have a flathead V8 and was produced in Highland Park Michigan so it's a long way from home. If you want any other info, let me know.

Early 1950 missing glove box plate
has the early bed on it, but also came with a late 50 bed. Still have to identify engine it is a flathead 8 but I don't think the oil pan is correct (has a removable plate in the bottom of it.) and there is another flathead motor in pieces in the garage. Also had a late 50 bed that came with it.

98RC300272 (has 2 letters after the vin, will have to post those later)

Sounds like it is the correct engine - the truck pan has a round cleanout that allows access to the pickup screen without taking the pan off. Only trucks had that - car pans don't.

Check your firewall for a build code.

OK cool I just hadn't seen the clean out in any material I have researched yet, thanks

This website from the flathead forum might be interesting to you. Scroll down about half-way and you'll see the oil pan selections. It's a pdf file so it might take a bit to load.

The serial number (vin) tells you most of what you know. 1949 226 six cyl half-ton
270174 is the serial number.

Please re-check the firewall. I think it should be P 2 NR ?(6)B 3378

P was a prefix used only by the Norfolk assembly plant
2 is Vermillion Red
NR Norfolk plant - no similar plants ended in F
date code - your 'C' should be a number, the B is February production
3378 is plant code for vehicle down the line

Hope this helps
Tim
