Ed (the last poster) is a friend of mine. His truck was originally red. I encouraged him to post the numbers. Kind of bummed that his numbers aren't clicking. Maybe with me giving you the color will help some. Also, his truck came out of arizona a long time ago, and it has the stamped metal plate over the wood in the bed (if that helps, but probably not).

Hi Doc,
We're glad he posted the numbers. It helps establish the cut-off between 49/50 trucks so all is not lost. Welcome aboard Edwin!

I just don't have anything that corresponds to TB in the records. Perhaps Carl will have more to add. Whatever spacing was used between the characters is sometimes significant.

The color code for red was 2 in 48/49 and somewhere in 50 it changed to E. Any chance the B is E instead?

The only T in a plant designation was Atlanta AT or ALT. I was wondering if there might be an A in front of the T that was lightly stamped.

Some trucks have no firewall stamping at all. Others we haven't been able to decode at all.

If you guys find anything else, let me know. An AZ truck could have come from several plants - Dallas, Kansas City, Richmond CA, Long Beach, etc.

I called Ed. He's at work out in his garage. I told him what you had found so far and your questions. He looked again. Said that there is not anything before the T. And he said there is no doubt that it was originally red. He mentioned that there is a small "nick" or apostrophe or a comma between the T and the B AND the B and the 4 (kind of like T,B,4....). Also said the B is definitely a B. These numbers are actually stamped on the passenger side above the battery box on his. He took a wire brush and removed the primer and filler to see them. He could actually see the indentions up under the dash and knew where to clean. Said he doesn't see any more anywhere else. So maybe that helps some more. Thanks.

Hi John, glad to have your truck info here. You already know most of it.

2 is color code for Vermillion Red
LB is assembly plant of Long Beach, California
15L - assembly date of 15 November
14 - vehicle down the line

9 - 49/50 serial number but the rest is a bit unusual
8 -
H -
V -
M -
240007 - is the serial number assigned by Ford.

I'll keep working on it. What is your engine and what is your wheelbase length?

HI mtflat,

the wheelbase measuring from bumpstop tp bumpstop (cos the frame is now bare) appears to be 134,1/2 inches and the engine was a flathead six ( m series i think).
Believe it or not the engine is going into a 27 T tudor. Ultimate recycling......

thanks so much for the info, i truly appreciate it John

You're welcome John.

A 1949 (which your serial number verifies) F6 COE with the big 6 and a wb of 134" should have a serial number or vin that looks like: 98MWH 240007 - not too far from what you listed, but order is a little different.

It's always possible someone on the assembly line got the letters in the wrong order and the V could easily be half a W.

Pieced together from a '48 Operator's Manual it breaks down like this -
9 - 49/50
8M - 254 ci six
W - COE
H - 134" WB

Should be a cool engine in your 27 Tudor. Have fun with it!
Tim

Thanks Tim,

all makes sense now, so my COE spent all its life in California, until it travelled abroad to Australia.....
Not my 27 Tudor, i just sold the engine to another rodder.

Regards John

Check the frame number again. The J shouldn't be there.

F1 - halfton
H - 225 flathead 6
I - ford used the letter I in place of 1 and means 1951
DL - Dallas assembly plant
18029 is the actual serial number

Firewall:
DL - Dallas assembly plant
S - should be color code for gray I believe
D1 or D16 should be date of assembly (D is for April)

The glovebox door or the tag was replaced with one from a 49 halfton with a 226 six assembled in Long Beach CA. The lines should not match with your 51 dash.

edit: your truck isn't a chopper - that cab should be original with that frame. Enough pointers match up for me to say they were assembled together.

thank you very much mr flat...the guy gave me a title and it reads 1950 and the vin number they used is the one from the glove box plate....i hope he didnt screw me,plus the title gives another licence plate than the one on the truck, and the plates that are on the 51 right now has tags for nov 2010 the guy said hes been drivin it,,,,so im hoping he didnt gimme the title for another truck and then there will be buck up fees or the sheriff will show up at my door

FWIW, technically the frame number is the one that matters. It sounds like the PO swapped glove box doors since the title he had was the one that matched the glove box door. One look at your avatar, and thus pickup, will say it's not a 1950. This could be problematic.

Well priorities are priorities, I'd get to the dimmu borgir concert! I'm a big Amon Amarth and Opeth fan myself. IMO, I'd wait until you get the extra paperwork to correct the vin to the frame. You could explain the problem at the DMV, ask for corrective paperwork, and go from there. Just a thought.
