I've been reading along in this thread for some time, and thought I'd add to the registry some info from the early 50 I had years ago, that was my first motor vehicle I bought when I was 15. I don't have any firewall info, so I don't know how helpful any of this will be, but here goes.

Serial 97HC256578
6 cyl. flathead
3 sp floor shift
raised panel bedsides
originally painted green

I'm going to assume is was built at a western assembly plant, perhaps Richmond, but I don't know. It was virturally rust free. It was registered in Oregon when I bought it in 1977 from a tow yard as an abandoned vehicle with holes in the side of the block and oil pan. I pulled out the drivetrain and installed a 289/C4/9" combo and got to drive it in my senior year in high school. I was a happy boy.

If anyone knows where this truck fit into the grand scheme of assembly for the model year, I'd be curious to know. And if the guy I sold it to from western Washington is looking in here, I'd like to know what ever became of it. Thanks.

Only thing I can add Wayne is that it falls really close to the model year split. It seems to depend on the assembly plant.

Normally I'd call it a late 49 but there have been several reported as 50's about that same place in the string, so it'll remain something of a mystery to me.

Wayne,

I looked at what I have and one in the registry is 97HC 256655 builkt in Richmond, CA on January 9, 1950. The firewall stamping on it is RHFI 2 9A580

This is just 77 vehicles off in the sequence from that truck. I do not have a good handle how many they cranked out in a day at the Richmond plant. You either have a real early 1950 build date or a real late 1949. Safe to say that it probably never saw the dealer lot until some date in early 1950. Sure wish we had the firewall stamping on this one. We could really narrow down the Richmond six cylinder VIN's with it.

2 - VIN # (The whole thing including the 98RC, 98RD, etc.)

Havi, I'm using the google translator - ask him if the apr 14 1948 is printed on the firewall.... that would be about right for serial # 88RC 51128

I get the idea that he's wondering about the numbers of trucks produced in '48 - is that right? This link might help him.

oftc

My firewall stamp states 7LB4F71
and on the engine is 8BA 6250 (or it might be 8520).

I was not sure where to get the vin aside from the plate on the passenger side id plate. That was hard to read...

Wonder is anyone can decode this? Thanks guys!

There should be a plate on the inside of the glove box door with the serial#, otherwise, it will be on the frame
