1948-1960: 1949/1950 VIN # Cut off
#541
Texan2004,
I read every reply on your thread up till 9/06... as much as I could do on dial up lol So sorry if I ask anything that has been covered. I started a thread about my truck year model before reading your post too, so I already have some great info from MTFlat and others. Anyway here is my info:
1. Believe to be 1950
2. 98RC494275 on glovebox (98RC494275 KC on firewall tag) (98RC494275 on frame)
3. No bed... saved it from the scrapyard Tue., Jan12th and got it "as is" for $300
4. N/A
5. Transmission appears to be 3spd on the floor. Have only found 1st 2nd and Rev so far
and haven't removed it and cleaned it up as of yet.
6. Floor
7. BKC12K194
So from your previous replies and from help here on this site let me decypher some of this on my own:
1950 1/2 ton with V8
October 12th build date (makes sense as the Dana 41 axle has a 9/16/50 production
date; 4.27:1 ratio)
Original color is blue: B=Sheridan Blue from one of your replies, but it is very dark. Could
it have been Barcelona Blue?
KC= Kansas City. Wish it was DA... I was born, raised, and still live in Huntsville, TX
194th produced that day/week/month...
The plate on the glovebox says "Series: F1" "Model: WBC"
I found 1 reference to WBC in your replies, and it seems that you were saying WBC meant stakebed. Is that correct? If so, could you post a link to a good picture of an original, or well restored stake bed so I can see what I'm shooting for?
Another thing I found interesting is that my truck was built in October of 50, and yet I found examples from previous posts of a truck built after mine, yet with a smaller production # in the vin. Example: UserID "Ford PUs" has a truck assembled 11/16/50 according to firewall stamp and sequence # 481822 from the vin. Mine is 10/12/50 (from firewall) and 494275 from the vin. Could each plant have been assigned a certain range of Vin numbers to build, and they got them done at their own pace? The mysteries deepen, but I sure do appreciate all of the effort everyone has put in to help me!! Anything I can help ya'll with, just let me know! RLF
*edit* Oh yeah, also has the small back window...
*edit2* I now know it has the optional 4 speed "Crash Box" Transmission. The shuttle for 3rd & 4th was frozen, but a little Zep45 cured that. So the truck had all drivetrail options: Flathead V8, 4 speed, and 4.27:1 rear. FYI That transmission will be for sale if anyone is interested.

RLF, you've got your info sorted out about as well as we can nail it down. Cars and Parts book of vins only shows Sheridan Blue used on trucks. I think Barcelona was a car color.
From what we've seen, you're right about assembly plants being assigned a string of serial numbers and building them at their own pace. I haven't seen any info to refute that. Carl knows more about the quirks in stamping from specific plants.
JHertel. You're paperwork should be fine depending on how picky your state is. Typos are very common on titles - that's what the 'B' is. It should have been a C. I wouldn't worry about it. I have a truck that has two different numbers stamped on it from the factory - probably built on a Friday

1 - 1950
2 - VIN # 98RD432126
3 - Bed - Raised Panel or flat panel (are you talking about the wheel wells?)
4 - No because it was converted for the water pump.
5 - Transmission - Don't know yet
6 - Floor shift
7 - Looks like SR M2DG 806
Original flat head 8, Engine number 98RD-432186
Although I haven't had a chance to clean the firewall, it appears to have the following painted: "F2" and "22EX".
Truck originally bought by a fire company as the fire chief's vehicle, went to William C. Moore Fire Apparatus Company in Boylston, MA for outfitting. Has functional water pump underneath the bed with, what appears to be, firemain input on passenger side and multi hose output on driver's side. Has some of the original hoses in the bed, fender mounted siren/light that functions (though I just purchased a new housing for it as the housing was rusted through). Though the exterior is a faded fire engine red, the interior looks to be a dark green.
Story is that when the fire chief retired, the fire dept gave him the truck. When he passed away, the truck went to his son (who I knew through my Uncle). When the son passed away, it was given to my Uncle. I was able to purchase it from my Uncle with the promise that I would try to restore it to original and not chop it.
Right now, I know that it needs new running boards and fenders. I haven't found any parts yet.

Well, here's my 1950 dumptruck, finally scraped the sludge off the firewall, lol.
*98RTH 500483*SP
stamped: A faint 1 or I, hard to tell if it is even a stamp, then...
A SP22L 2277 784
EDIT: in the daylight, I see the I is part of the M, and the A's horizontal line is only a scratch.
So M=meadow green
SP=Saint Paul
22L=November 22nd
2277=build sequence number
784=some other special code
Thanks to Tim for helping out.
