It was fairly dark outside still, and I couldn't get up close to the firewall. My flashlight caught the HF on the upper right corner of the serial plate, and that was about it.

Any chance that Paint Code was a plant code and said HP? OR given your location, SP for Saint Paul?

This truck is up on the Canadian border west of International Falls, MN. Doesn't make much sense to me either. Whenever I get it home, I'll get a better look, though.

I just got back from South Dakota and my uncle confirms that my truck was purchased at a farm auction in North Dakota in 1987 from the original owner. It was blue when he got it. He had it painted red at a later date. I am interested in returning it to it's original color. The number stamped on the fire wall has been confirmed as correct "SP 2E 400346" What color blue was it originally

Regards,
Jerry Johnson

The paint code seems to be missing from the firewall stamping. If it was blue, I believe the color was Sheridan Blue and the paint code for that was either "B" or the number "5"

Howdy; I am in the proccess of reviving an F1 that I bought out of state. It was titled as a 49, F2 but I have some doubts. The truck has been street rodded and many things have been altered, some parts were missing. Here is some of the info I have come up with.
87?C96878 the ? may be an R. Faintly stamped in rt ft frame rail
10LB21E09 stamped in driver side firewall
firewall tag only has LB stamped at far right
No glove box door= no VIN tag
Original color is light gray, raised box sides, stainless grill trim, hole in trans cover= floor shift, small back window, holes for both sun visors & wipers, fresh air intake over right headlight & heater hole in right kick panel area. I think that someone may have cleaned out the storage shed and put some of this together, way back when.
This site is great, way more info in one place than I could hope to dig up, Thanks. Rick

8=1948 7H=6 cyl. flattie C=F1, the remainder should be the production sequence. Someone may correct me if I'm wrong. Oh, and welcome to the board!

Havi has it right:

8 = 1948
7H = Flathead 6
C = F1 - 1/2 ton

96878 is the seuence h\number and it is correct for a 1948

The firewall stamping is as follows:

10 = Color code = Unknoiw. I've seen this color code one other time. I also have 4 and 11 as possibilities for grey.

LB = Long Beach, CA assembly plant
21E = May 21 build date. Assuming that the cab came with the frame, it would be 5/21/48 but not all plants were doing firewall stampings in 1948, Some did but it did not become commanplace until the 1949 model year. I do not have any other examples of 1948's from Long Beach with firewall stampings,

The SS grill trim could mean the body is a 48 if it is the original grill r someone vould have aded it later. There are some other small difference between 48's, 49's and 50's but they are minor and could have been added as replacements for a broken part at some point in the trucks life.

Enjoy the truck and thank you for the information.

Carl

Does the vin # on the title match the one on the frame rail? Is the trcuk and F1 or an F2? The F1 has the 6' bed and the F2 has an 8' bed, 8 lug wheels. etc.

Carl, the earlier factories "no stamp" seems to be true. I found my low prod. # serial number truck's date stenciled inside the cab below the rear window. I can't remember the date off hand. But as mentioned in my previous post, I couldn't find any stamping on the firewall....now I know why, lol. post #'s 416 and 417.

I know that some of the 48's had dates stenciled on them in various places. Yours may be one that I am thinking about. This stuff woujld make an ISO auditor's head explode in today's world

thanks for the info on the F1. In reply to Texan #430 post, the title # and the VIN # on the frame do match. It is a 1/2 ton, short box, don't think the frame has been cut and having been street rodded, it is running regular Ford wheels, not light truck. Don't know why the previous title had it as a 1949 F2 but mine just states it is a pickup. No Problem.

98MTH7031C

9 = 1949/50
M = 254 cid. Flathead 6-cyl (110HP) - This engine was only offered in 1950 so you have a 50, not a 49.
8TH = 2 Ton (158" Wheelbase)
7031C = VIN Sequence #. Can you have him double check the C? Is it a 0 or a 6? There should not be a letter there. Also, can you have him check the firewall for a series of numbers stamped into the firewall (not a data plate)?

Thanks
