Engine: 0J-3140
0 = 1950
J = Flathead V-8 with 4spd and standard clutch
3140 = is just the consecutive engine built

Trim: 16
I don't have any trim codes

Paint: 22
22 = Hmm I don't have a 22 code, got 20,21,23,24

Model: PF83
PF83 = Mercury M-68 pickup 122" wheelbase

PF83H50-24182
PF= Mercury M-68 122" wheelbase
83 = Express pickup
H = Built in Oakville, Ontario
50 = 1950
24182 = 24182 truck built. Should be late 1950 but don't quote me on that.

Thanks Nathan!
Do you know which colors corespond to what paint codes? I've got a note that 21 was Vermillion - right?

Glen, do you have any idea what the original paint color was? That would help fill in one more blank. Up under the dash, behind the gas tank, etc are places the original may have survived. Thanks.

Tim

No problem. When I get my computer fixed I plan on launching a website purely dedicated to the 48-52 trucks. I've collected a lot of information over the years.

Hello fellas..Its been a while since Ive been here in the forums but I ran across your request for vin information..I have 2 trucks to give you info on

the first one is registered and titled as a 49 right now it is a dark green, small back window, flat bed sides ( I think the bed is original with heavy duty rear bumper with supports running up to the top of the bed and the front has a heavy duty brush gaurd), driver side wiper only with plug in passengers side, also has a heater(not sure if that is rare or not) I think the tranny is a 3 speed(# on side of tranny T87D-1 WC DIV SB2) it is also a floor shift ( very sloppy) with a flathead v-8 ( not running since late 70s) VIN# 97HC215557MP...cowl stamping 7MP12E256

the second truck is a 50, right now it is red but looks like it might have also been green originally.Small rear window smooth bed sides ( not sure if bed is original) also has a heater box under dash, looks like it might have been added later. it has a colomn shifter, no idea about the engine as a previous owner put a late model v-8 in it the vin# is 97HC334965NR..the cowl stamp on this one was the the right side of the voltage regulator in the upper right corner it is PMNR24 K 708

just wanted to say glad to be back in the best forum on earth for the early FORDS and sorry for the long winded post

MP is Memphis, TN

I've also discovered some trucks that were built at the Somerville, MA assembly plant though nothing published on these trucks mentions this.

Another plant was in Buffalo, NY.

I've actually been assembling this data but I'm not sure how to post it. It's in spreadsheet form (Excel). If anyone knows how or can assist with providing a place to post it, I would be happy to. It includes stuff like the assembly plants and their codes, paint codes both letters and numbers as most plants (not all) switched to using letters for paint codes in 1950.

just wanted to say glad to be back in the best forum on earth for the early FORDS and sorry for the long winded post
First Truck:

97HC215557MP

9 = 1949/50 (Base on the VIN sequence #, petty safe bet it's a 1949
7H = Flathead 6
C = 1/2 ton
215557 = Vin Sequence #. Based on yours, I'd say it's aearly to mid-year 49.
MP = Memphis, TN assembly plant

Fiewall stamping: 7MP12E256

7 = Color = Meadow Green
MP = Memphis, TN assembly plant
12E = MAy 12, 1949 build date
256 = Some sort of plant specific sequence #.

Flat bed sides would indicate taht the bed is not original to this truck. The flat bed sides began showing up mid to late 1950.

Second Truck:

VIN #: 97HC334965NR

9 = 1949/50 - based on the VIN sequence #, it's a 50.
7H = Flathead 6
C = 1/2 ton
334965 = VIN sequence #. This one is certainly a 1950. Cut off seems to be between 250,000 and 280,000 depending on the assembly plant
NR = Norfolk, VA assembly plant. This plant still makes 1/2 ton trucks but is slated for closure later this year.

Firewall stamping: PMNR24 K 708

PM = Paint Code = Meadow Green. Point of interest - The Norfolk assembly plant alway put a P in front of the paint designation. No other plant did this

NR = Norfolk, VA assembly plant

24K = October 24, 1950 build date

708 = Plant specific sequence number of some sort.

The flat sided bed with square stake pockets could well be original to this truck unless there are some sort of glaring sign to indicate it wasn't. Lok for places where the original paint may have survived.

Is there any indication as to whether this truck had a column shift? Curious.

Huggybear, its been awhile - welcome back!

A couple of your questions are answered in my resource book. It's not foolproof tho, it lists Richmond as VA. Here's some additional or corrected assembly plants.

BF = Buffalo, NY
DA = Dearborn, MI
HM = Highland Park, MI
KC = Kansas City, MO
LU = Louisville, KY
SR = Somerville, MA

One thing to note. Many plants used different codes to identify themselves.

Below is a complete list of everything I have for plant codes and alittle information on some of the plants. It's all fact as best I can tell. If anyone knows something I've posted below to be inaccurte, I'd appreciate you letting me know. Information is as follows:

Atlanta, GA - AT and ATL (Opened in 1947 and closed OCtober 26, 2006 - most recently produced the Taurus)
Buffalo, NY - BF and BUF (Opened 1931)
Chester, PA - CS (Opened Aug. 1927, began Operations Mar. 1928 - Closed Feb. 1961)
Chicago, IL - CH and CGO (Opened 1924 - Still Producing for Ford)
Dallas, TX - DA, DL, DAL (Until I saw Tim's posting above, I always assumed DA was Dallas. I have collected only one truck which had this. It belongs to FTE member mrlightrail in Oklahoma and was purchased from his neighbor. The proximity to Dallas mad me assume it was a Dallas truck. This is the one and only example I have of the DA indentiftier and it was a 1948 truck. All of the 1949's used DAL and all of the 1950's I have use the DL identifier)
Edgewater, NJ - EG (Opened 1930 - Closd 1955 and operations moved to Mahwah, NJ facility)
Highland Park, MI - HP or HM (I've heard that HM was used for Higland Park and I've seen this published but I do not have any examples of it. All six Highland Park trucks I've come aross were identified by the initials HP - First Bonusbuilt produced 11/27/47 - The only dedicated trcuk plant at the time.)
Kansas City - KC (Still building vehicles though the current plant was opened in 1951. The palnt that built the 48-50 trucks was opened in 1912 and closed in 1951 when the new facillty was opened)
Long Beach, CA - LB (Opened 1930)
Memphis, TN - MP and MEM (Opened 124 - Closed 1958)
Norfolk, VA - NR (Opened 1925 - Schedule for Closure 2007)
Richmond, CA - RH and RIC (This is of course Richmond, CA a city just outside of San Francisco, not Richmond, VA. Tim is correct. This plant is erroneously posted as being in Richmond, VA in many places on the internet. One gentleman even had Ford decode his Richmond trcuk and they said it was Richmond, VA. Type in Ford Richmond, CA assembly plant intom any serch engine and you will come up with a ton of informtion on the facility. Nothing comes up for Richmond, VA - The Richmond, CA plant opened 8/1/31 and closed in 1955 when operations were moved to a new larger - 2x - facility in San Jose, CA)
Somerville, MA - SR and SOM (Any literature that I have seen on where these trucks were built does not include the Somerville, MA plant in their listing but I have two examples of these so I know they did. - Plant closed in 1958)
Saint Paul, MN - SP (Also known as the Twin Cities Assembly plant. Currently builds Ford Rangers and is the oldest continuously operated Ford Assembly Plant. Opened in 1924 - Scheduled for closure next year - 2008.

I've got too much time on my hands.

Thanks Texan for the rundown on my two trucks..I had most of the info sorted out except for the PM for the Meadow Green but wanted to add my info to the growing list. Hey!..the 49 was built right around my birthday except 13 years earlier..lol

Looks like these trucks were built everywhere!

and Texan...yes the 50 with the smooth side bed did and still does have the column shifter in it..although probably unuseable..looks like it was cut on with a torch at the base of the shifter inside of the engine bay.someone before me hacked in a late model v-8 and didnt do a very good job of it
