1948-1960: 1949/1950 VIN # Cut off
#151
I have not been on the forum for quite awhile. I will try to post all of my information soon.
My truck does have the non stamped bed sides. I also do not have the welded in radio brackets under my dash. This must be one of the trucks that used the strange faceplate on the radio. I am still trying to figure out a way of welding in the brackets or bolting them in... but I will wait to do that until I decide do a complete repaint of the truck. Then I won't worry about melting the paint when I weld the underdash, etc.. I have the column shift. I will have to think about other things I have found to be seemingly different, etc..
Anyway.... I will post all the numbers shortly

1949/1950 VIN # Cut off
1 - 1950 F-1 late (or believed to be)
2 - VIN # 97HC313570
3 - Bed - Raised Panel see note below
4 - Not sure if original ""
5 - Trans 3 sp, 2,3 syncro
6 - Floor shift
7 - # PANR18 G64 On firewall above hood spring on driver's side.
Black
Possible late '50 since when installing wiring kit, gauges weren't exactly like manual layout and seemed to be cross between 50 and 51 schematic. Been too long to remember what exactly was different. Windshield wiper motor on driver side, dash braces cut/bent and had pass side wiper . Looks like late installation.
Rear axle, left front spring hangar was bolted to frame not rivet. Found when trying to figure why truck went down rd "sideways". too long of spring on left. Left wheel /axle must have hit something really hard but no visible fender bed damage so must have had bed replaced. Bed floor had thin wood planks under where two sheet metal layers had been welded to front and sides.
Sun visor on left side. Knockout on right.
Small rear window.
Heater was red so assume not original. (was in N.C.)
H226 flathead
Maybe too much info so delete if so desire. "Additional info" supplied in other replys was interesting to me but could be like elementary reading to others.
Not sure what the 8 +/- numbers on the data plate on firewall apply to but would they help? to you and all contributors. Jim Bob (old log in name)

It's a 1950 F1 and a late one at that. It came with the Flathead V8 which is what you still have from our discussion. 506500 is the VIN sequence #. In my collection of nearly 200 VIN #'s, I only have one that is higher than yours (508885).
If you look on the firewall inside the engine compartment, there should be a serious of numbers stamped into it. These will tell you a bit more infomraion about the truck such as the date built and where it was built. MY guess is that your truck was built in Dallas but we can tell you for certain with the Firewall stampings. I would be real interested to get a look at yours since it is such a late build.
Just curious about your transmission. Is it a column shift or a floor shift? Which transmission do you have???
Look forward to meeting you soon.
Carl

49, F-3 vin #
If your still interested in the F series vin #s. I have a 49 F-3 vin 97HY 311654 CS. I beleive it was origanally sold as a front end and chassis only to Boyertown Auto Body Works. They installed a Boyertown Step-N-Serve body, then turned it over to the US Post Office for mail service. In all they built 2500, bodies on Ford chassis for 1949. You can check out the truck in the article, "Neither Rain nor Sleet" by BobTomaine in the October 3rd issue of Autoweek. Thanks, WICKKID.

1 - Is the truck in Hawaii and ahs it always been?
2 - What year October 3 Issue of Autoweek?
3 - Does your truck have the small rear window (vs. the larger rear window that appeared on the 1951/52 trucks)?
4 - Does/did your truck a floor shift transmission or a column shift?
5 - What engine are you running? the original six or something else?
6 - Can you look inside the engine compartment for a serious of #'s and letters that may be stamped into the firewall? If you can locate them, we may be abe to give you the date the truck was built, where it was built (though it appears to have been in Chester, PA) and the original color.
Based on the VIN # you provided, I would say your truck is actually a 1950 model year truck and not a 1949. The original purpose of this thread was to identify the cut-off for VIN #'s between 1949 and 1950 (we are now out to debunk or confirm some other urban myths surrounding these trucks as well as determine/confirm the VIN # cut-offs for 1949/1950). Ford did not start over with new VIN #'s in 1950. They simply continued with the string from 1949. We do know that the cut-ff for 1949 six cylinder trucks was different than for 1949 V8 trucks but in both cases the cut-off occurred below VIN # 300,000. If you can find that number I asked for in item 6 above, we will likely be able to tell you what day the try was built.
Again, welcome to FTE and if you can figure out how to post picuteres in a gallery on here, we would love to see some photos of you truck.

Hi Jammero, looks like a '49 V8 half-ton. 183,109 is the serial number which began Jan 16, 1948 and ran thru Sept 15, 1951.
The firewall stamping is production code:
2 - Vermillion Red (is this right?)
CH - chicago assembly plant
25 - 25th
D - April Should only be one letter for the date.
A582 - any chance the A could be a 4? This numeric string is the unit/car number produced that day.
Branch number looks like Chicago abbrev
Carl's our official information guru - I was just stopping by. Enjoy your truck.

Carl, I was wondering................
Prior to Jan 16, '48 when the Bonus Built trucks debuted, I've heard the 48's looked just like the 46/47's. In your collection of vins are any of them designated as 899C's (which they should have been if they exist)?
Also, on the Old Ford Truck Club for 1950 models they state that 148,956 50's were sold. Assuming (I know) that 1949 sold 170,000 trucks and we know '48 saw sales of under 166,000 - totalled together I get around 485,000.
What do we know about the the 50/51 model break? Was it similar to 47/48? The new vin and body style supposedly began Sept 15, '51.
Are the trucks we're calling 50's over 485K actually 51's that look like 50's as Ford continued to use up old sheetmetal?
Any thoughts or information, Carl or anybody?
