1948-1960: 1949/1950 VIN # Cut off
#1171
#1173
As suggested by George, the purpose of this thread is to try and determine what the VIN sequence # cut off is between the 1949 and 1950 Ford Trucks. It would also be a good opportunity to try and identify the VIN # cut-off for other little 1950 oddities like the raised panel bed being converted to a flat panel bed and the floor shift three speed versus column shift three speed.
Best way to do this is probably to ask for the following information:
1 - Year truck is registered as (or believed to be)
2 - VIN # (The whole thing including the 98RC, 98RD, etc.)
3 - Bed - Raised Panel or flat panel
4 - Is this the original bed
5 - Transmission
6 - Column shift or floor shift
7 - # stamped into the firewall if you have one.
?'s 3-6 may not be relavent if the truck has had major mods but if you know anything about what was there it would be helpful. I'll be sure to keep results updated. I need to figure out how to set up a link to the spreadsheet or data base I use.
Participation is obviously voluntary but would be greatly appreciated. Any other information on the truck you may want to provide would also be welcomed.
Sugggestions for other information to collect are also being welcomed.
Thanks,

1949-50 trucks used the same serial prefix 9, so we can only go by the consecutive unit number to figure a timeline, combined with the date code stamped on the firewall. I found an old thread with another Kansas City truck built late November 1948 with a consec number of 165187. Assuming consistent construction for another 10 months, that would put us pretty close to 323000. Bingo.

Hi Bill, welcome to the forum! I'm going to go out on a limb here and try to help. According to your data, it looks like you have a late '49 F2 truck originally equipped with the 226 6 cylinder engine, black in color, scheduled for build September 15, 1949 in Kansas City. I something doesn't sound right, let me know. If others here with more accurate data find me incorrect, they'll let us know. Start a new thread with pics of your truck and say hi when you get a chance.

Thanks for the information. I've checked a few other sites and get mixed information. That will help me out a lot, as all the paperwork I have says 48 on it, and I knew it was not on 48. I just want to be able to title it with the right year. I'm still a little confused about the 4th digit being a D. I know the truck is an F2 but nothing lists the D as a model distinguisher.
C=F1
D=F2
Y=F3
T=F4-6

Looking thru the data I have your truck built Sept 15, another built Sept 20 and a third built Sept 21 and a 4th on Sept 23...
Kansas City produced 80 trucks between yours on the 15th and the next on the 20th, then 22 more between the 20th and 21st and an additional 70 by the 23 of Sept.
These specific trucks on the 15th and 20th were Black, the 21st truck was Palisade Green and the truck on the 23 was Vermillion Red.
Fun stuff, eh?

I have a f1 sold to me with no title as a 1948. I know it’s a 1949 based off of searches but I’d like as much info as I can in this truck. It seems to have every option available and a 4speed tranny which looks original but I’m pretty sure wasn’t an option. The vin is 98rc* 390432* kc and the stamp above the hood hinge looks like A KC 18 L 149. Can anybody help me out with finding more info on this old truck?

9 = 1949 or 1950
8R = V8
C = 1/2 Ton (F1)
390432 = Serial Number
A KC 18 L 149
a = Raven Black
KC = Kansas City
18 L = November 18, 1950... I think this should be an E not a L... The would make it built on May 18, 1950
149 = Down the line...

Where can I find the firewall stamp? Also in trying to get a title for this will it mater that the bill of sale lists it as a 1949? Furthermore was a 4speed on the floor an option as this one has a 4 speed which looks original. Also has dual windshield wipers. Dual sun visors. Dual side mirrors. Heater. Some lights. Interior lights. Radio. Steel bed. V8. Black original color. I’ve never attempted to get a title for a vehicle and shied away from purchasing a vehicle without a title. But with the complete condition of this truck and virtually no holes through it I had to take the risk. Can anyone tell me the likelyhood of obtaining a title for this is?
