I am needing help verifying that our pickup is a 1949. It has no engine, or seats. Inside on the front passenger side we have a plate with VIN number, and after reading on this thread I looked in the glove box and it has another plate in there, but with the same VIN number. Only difference, the glove box plate says Model 9RC. I have 2 pictures. 1st is the plate in the engine compartment, and then the glove box.

 

Welcome to the forum! The consecutive unit number being what it is, it most probably falls into the 1949 range. There should be a series of numbers/letters stamped into the firewall near the cowl seam. See if you can find them and post what you have there. They will identify your color code, build date, etc. mtflat has been keeping score on vins and dates for years. He may have a more definitive timeframe for your truck and others built at the St. Paul plant. But generally speaking, unit numbers closer to 300,000 is where the cutoff is between 1949 and 1950. Both years begin with 9, and the 8RC show V8, half ton. (F1)

 

It is sandwiched between a pair of trucks built late August 1949. I don't know how quickly SP (Saint Paul) used their block of vin no's but that should get you in the ballpark.

Oh, and during these early years, Ford used the calendar year Jan-Dec as the model yr.

SP is same as his.

There should be a number or letter before that, and a number and letter after it. Also, the vin would help me establish the year. Some plants made running line changes so establishing the year is important. Thanks. A clear picture would be a big help also.

Sorry everyone first time with old trucks.It is a yellow 1950 ford f1 truck and the vehicle no. 98rc 379736.I looked and sanded there for more characters but could not find any.

I have in my data that 16 is the color code for yellow. I have no proof that is correct. I also show 15 as light gray, and again I have only truck owner's help to get that much info.

This is my first post as I have just acquired my first truck, I found a southern beauty billed as a 1950 F 1, I don't know much about it except that it appears to be fairly complete, this is the data I know and I would very much appreciate it if anyone can help me decode the id's I found
Vin: 97HC259276 (found on the title)
21C and under this 5086B (found stamped on front crossmember near right front mtr mnt)
P4ND75 and under this M 4285 (found stamped on firewall behind left hood hinge)
87HC double ended arrow 70087 (found stamped on trany)
truck is a short bed with a raised panel tailgate
flathead V8 with a 3 speed on the floor non-synchro

Your serial number indicates it may have been a 1949 model F1 equipped with the 226 flathead 6 cylinder engine. It was common back in those days to title trucks as the year sold, so if it was a late built 49 that didn't sell until 1950, that could explain the year discrepancy.

The 21C number found on the crossmember is a part number for the particular piece of frame. It has no bearing on serial numbers or identification.

The numbers stamped on the firewall will need to be decoded by someone other than me. Those typically contain the color code, assembly plant, date of assembly and other internal plant coding. But they are not in a sequence that makes sense to me. You might double check those.

The transmission number indicates to me it came from a 1948 F1 and is not original to the truck on your title, if in fact the title matches your truck. The frame serial number may be found on top of the right side frame rail, near the motor mount. You might see if you can find that. There may also be (should be) a plate inside the glove box door with identification, too.

The firewall code tells most of what you want to know.
4 - color was gray
OS is probably CS, for the Chester PA assembly plant
29M was assembly date of 29 Dec.
841 is the vehicle down the line

It is technically a 49, but it couldn't have made it to a dealer until January1950. Even trucks built much earlier were titled in the next calendar year - when they sold at the dealership. So I wouldn't sweat it and just keep calling it a '50 as it has been. Enjoy the truck and thanks for playing along!

the previous owner tells me its a 1950 and has a good backstory knowing the original owner.
