Thanks for the data. 10 was the code for gray, and the early F series only had 5 colors. It sounds like you have it all sorted out - congrats on the "new" truck.
It's possible the original owners believed it was a '49 and the old title may even have said that. Some states titled in the year purchased regardless of when the truck was produced. Your truck is a very late '48 and may not have made it thru the system until sometime in early '49.

As suggested by George, the purpose of this thread is to try and determine what the VIN sequence # cut off is between the 1949 and 1950 Ford Trucks. It would also be a good opportunity to try and identify the VIN # cut-off for other little 1950 oddities like the raised panel bed being converted to a flat panel bed and the floor shift three speed versus column shift three speed.
Best way to do this is probably to ask for the following information:
1 - Year truck is registered as (or believed to be)
2 - VIN # (The whole thing including the 98RC, 98RD, etc.)
3 - Bed - Raised Panel or flat panel
4 - Is this the original bed
5 - Transmission
6 - Column shift or floor shift
7 - # stamped into the firewall if you have one.
?'s 3-6 may not be relavent if the truck has had major mods but if you know anything about what was there it would be helpful. I'll be sure to keep results updated. I need to figure out how to set up a link to the spreadsheet or data base I use.
Participation is obviously voluntary but would be greatly appreciated. Any other information on the truck you may want to provide would also be welcomed.
Sugggestions for other information to collect are also being welcomed.

That's great info, schoo. The early trucks had a flat back panel and changed somewhere along the line to add the ribs, which probably added stability and noise control. Your first truck, titled 48 is stamped 49 with the 97HC prefix, built December 1, 1948. Your other truck is a 49 built May 2, 1949. Both trucks being built in Richmond, CA, this gives us great info that the ribbed panels at that factory began as a running change sometime between December 1, 1948 and May 2, 1949, and between unit numbers 164691 and 186229. The more people that add to the database, the closer we can narrow these things down. Thanks for sharing.

In addition to Wayne's info, both trucks were originally meadow green. (Color code 7)
Richmond CA must have started on the new vin series for 49 ahead of other plants. Two other trucks with earlier '49 vins have production dates of mid February.
The F4 vin was typical for 48/49 trucks with the 98RT prefix. F4 six cylinder truck vins were 97HTL during those years. V8's didn't change to 98RTL until sometime mid to late 50.

4 I suspect it was delivered new without a bed
5 4 speed spur transmission

7 4SP16B102201128 (I guessed at some of these, not stamped well.
It came from north central Iowa.

Well within the 1950 model year, built February 16 in Saint Paul, MN
Color? Chester and KC were using 4 for Meadow Green, other plants apparently used other codes. I didn't have any notes on SP colors so this helps put more pieces of the puzzle together.

Hey all. New guy. I promise Ill start an intro thread later with some pics and story. Cliff notes are. I have a Black 49 F1 V8 restored by my Grandfather in the mid 80's. he promised me the truck when I was a kid and last year he followed through and tossed me the keys and title. I have been cleaning it up and what not and now curious to its roots. what I do know is this
