You're very welcome!
3 is the code for Black - any chance you're looking at red-oxide primer showing thru?

3 - black
CH - Chicago assembly plant
8E - assembly date of 8 May, 1950
840 - vehicle down the line.

There is also a set of numbers and letters that are "usually"{ stamped into the firewall itself. This is not the information on the firewall VIN plate but a different set of numbers. The stamped intot the firewall #'s indicate the date built, where built, and we believe, color code and sequence # for that plant for that month or week. If you can provide those as well, we can likely decode these for you. Plants were not consistent in how they used these firewall stamping codes and there is no official source available to sort all of this out. One puprose of collecting all of this information is to attempt to decipher all of this.

Information on three or four cabs would certinaly be welcomed.

The next three digitts should be the date code but they did not use the Letter "I" (I assume to avoid confusion with the number 1). Could you take another look for us?? Also, can you provide the VIN number? this helps to corrolate the firewall stampings to the VIN numbers for the various assembly plants.

I apologize for the delayed reply. For some reason, I am no longer receiving e-mail notifications when there are new posts to this thread. Guess I need to check my user CP to make certain that feature was not somehow changed.

maracayero777.

this is from google translator - hope it's close

and one more F1

I just bought this 1950 truck last week. I have wanted one for a long time.
I don't have the number from the tag as the photo I took of it did not turn out. I quit writing when I can snap a picture of the numbers. I will have to try again.

The number on the firewall is MP C81 N1 C1 F342
It has the raised pannel box
6 Cylinder 3 speed on the column
with all the original patina intact!

The title has a state assigned VIN number on it >> ?? I really don't get that!
Marty

Carl will have to help with this one - I just don't have much to go on with that firewall info. I can tell you it was assembled in Memphis, TN and the C81 indicates it was likely delivered as a chassis/cab

When paperwork (titles) are lost and replacements are applied for, many states just assign a random number. It has nothing to do with the vin or vehicle serial number.

Thanks for posting.

finally got the VIN #

I finally got the VIN # off the cab & glovebox door. I was wondering if it is also stamped on the frame someplace.
My Vin is 97HC 297968
This truck has a raised pannel bed with a steel floor. Is there a spreadsheet that I can look up with the decode info on it?
Every time I look at the truck I find little things that need doing and things that are in good shape as well. I am planning on attaching a tow bar to the truck to get it home tomorrow night. The problem with that is - - - My wife will not see me for a while! does anyone have a write up on the carb for a six cyl?

Hi Marty. The vin is actually a serial number to identify the chassis. The term vin came along in the 60's.

Yes, the serial number should be stamped somewhere on the frame and is the "official" number for titles. It also appears on the rating plate (glovebox door) and the data plate (firewall).

The frame stamp is usually lightly stamped, top of the frame rail in the vicinity of the motormount cross member and can appear on either driver or passenger side. Clean with fine steel wool and shine a light at a low angle to highlight the stamping.

There are no spread sheets - Ford burned the records in/around 1967. However, these are easy and there weren't many options. It's pretty easy to tell if you had them.

Your serial number says it was:
9 - 1949 or 50
7H - 226 cid flathead six cylinder
C - half-ton chassis
297968 - the actual serial number of your truck, these numbers were assigned in blocks to the assembly plants. This number confirms it as a 1950.

If you have questions as you go along, start a new thread for each part/issue. Also, you'll want to pick up a shop manual - ebay has lots of them.

I'm scratching my head over your firewall code.
Number for paint code is missing at the front of the string.... black was code 3
LU is Louisville assembly plant
H is August build, but it should have a number before the H for the day of the month.
53 doesn't fit the pattern

L161J Louisville's unique code for vehicle number down the line

Sorry, this is the best I can do without more info. Nice collection you got going!!
LUH53L181J

Could Louisville assembly plant put theDate code, month "H" before the "5" and the the paint code "3".

L161J = Haven't sorted this out yet.

I only have five Louisville trucks on the list and I only have three with firewall stamping information. That said, yours fits pretty well with one that was added to the list on 7/31/09.

I'd say you're right on Moe and thanks for the info - that's the same thing Carl posted in the next msg.

Thanks for the info hselin. Your 48 half-ton V8 truck was produced in Long Beach, CA

7 - Meadow Green
LB - Long Beach assembly plant
10F - June 10 assembly
14 - car down the line

The 5 spd was not original from the factory, but may have been a dealer installation. The 21C 508B is a frame part number.

What do you mean by K/H damage?
