I keep my engine looking like that by using Simple Green. I put a plastic bag over the air filter and spray the whole engine down. Let it sit for 10 minutes and then, using a light spray, hose is off. Simple Green is biodegradable and gives that nice mint smell. Been doing it for 3 years now and it still looks like new.
