88 f250 7.3 diesel fuel pump

How do you turn the fuel pump up on a 1988 7.3 diesel to give more power.

This was covered on this forum a couple of months ago. Search the forum. You are looking for "Fuel injection pump adjustment article". From what I remember the adjustment screw is inside the pump accessed thru a door on the passenger side of the pump.

Above is correct. its a 5/32" allen wrench screw that is inside a small "door" that is shaped like a pentagon. lots of fuel will come out when you take this cover off. also, you will probably have to turn the engine over to get the screw lined up with the window-hole.

And then your engine will smoke like Hell for a while. It will stop though...when your pistons melt.

muddermike, do you have any black smoke under hard accelleration now?
If you do, you will just be wasting fuel to turn it up more.

The article refferenced above will state a little turn on the screw is a lot more fuel.
One flat of the allen screw will probably be more fuel than it can burn.
If you have any black smoke at all now, I would not go through the trouble to turn it up. You will probably have to re adjust it back down if you do. Everybody seems to turn it up to much when they do it the first time. Then the air police are mad at you for all the clouds of black smoke and wasted fuel.

If you want to increase the power, you would be better off to work on the exhaust and air intake areas before you adjust the injection pump. With better air flow in those areas you will be able to benifit more from the increased fuel.

its always kewl to let ppl know that you got a diesel BUT
more respect is shown when they are clean burning. As Dave stated above, if you have a light haze of smoke on hard pulls, you are getting enough fuel for the engine to burn efficiently. Work on getting it to breathe better and you will have more benefits and money in your pocket.
