I did some reading on this subject (papers and such) and basically with a top 1:1 ratio and no TC lockup the auto will lose as it consumes power to operate. I can't remember the exact numbers but it takes a few hp out of the drivetrain and basically dumps it into the tranny fluid as heat (friction). So you're pretty much guaranteed to get better mileage with a manual in these trucks.
Modern autos do a lot better though and seem to be able to match standards just because they can stay in the torque curve longer when accelerating, and then they have the TC lockup etc. to reduce lossage while cruising.
In either case an OD could help if it puts you in the right RPM range when cruising.
If you run 300rpm higher at all times with a tranny that eats up more horsepower you're going to use more fuel, bottom line. Whether it be 1mpg or 5mpg it's going to use more fuel. The more you drive the more it'll matter.
Here, let's work it out hypothetically: If an auto does 10 and a stick only does 11 that's still a 10% increase. Let's say you spend $400 a month on fuel @ $3 a gallon (a little high for some cities but a little low for others). This is 133 gallons a month driving a total of 1330 miles. Drive those miles at 11mpg and you're saving almost $40 a month. That's $480 a year. This is assuming you only get 1mpg increase and it could quite possibly be more than that. This is also assuming you only drive 1300 miles a month which most of us do a lot more. So from that stand point I'd say yeah, it's definitely worth it.
Personally I love the C6 but then again I'm not overly concerned about mileage.
Well If I can scrape up the gear I'll do the standard, besides I can't run a PTO on the c=6 so I was going to need to use an electric pump for the dump. I was already going to pull the body off it to clean up the frame anyway , and I have to mount the tool boxes and build a dump bed for it. I'll see what I can dig up for parts. The only thing I'm really missing is the tranny itself and the clutch linkeage. I already decided to stay with the 390, it seams to be a very nice engine and if I swapped in the 460 I have, it would be the electronic FI and I'm really against modern technoligy :-). I think I will do the durospark though, they did do a good job with that and they're pretty dependable and just staying in better tune should help the mpg a bit.
That brings up another question, I have the formular for cfm's for HP, but what size 4bbl do you run on a 390 for economy,(didn't think I'd ever ask that question)
actually if something happened to the 390 I have another one , that helped with my decision about keeping it. Besides I'll probably Ebay the 460/c-6 combo after I rape the E-350, I've been on a cleaning frenzy the last few months, I've got too much crap around.
