PS flush questions

Planning to flush the power steering fluid on my 99 XLT before winter, not just siphon-off the fluid on the reservoir but flush it by 'return line disconnect' method.

Any idea how much fluid I need? Also, Haynes said use ATF type F, would Mobil 1 ATF which is Mercon/Dexron III be okay? I want to replace the fluid with full synth, and Mobil 1 happens to be readily available, other ATF used by other members here like Red Line or Royal Purple need to be ordered I believe.

Any feedback and tips from those who have done it is appreciated.
Thanks

I used Mobil1 for a drain/fill of the reservoir last year. No problems, and seems to have solved the slight pump whine I used to experience with a cold engine on below-zero days.

I'm not sure I understand your question. But if you mean if power steering fluid can be replaced with ATF, expedition apparently can use ATF (per Haynes manual, as well as a couple of post here) although Ford manual calls for use of FORD PREMIUM power steering fluid.

fyi, for my wife's 98 Volvo V70, the manual does say to use ATF, and I was able to flush-out the old fluid by disconnecting the return-line and steering the wheel full swing in both direction with the motor off.

No what I meant was, as you indicated you will be going to a full synthetic from a patial syn, are the two compatable in that you can introduce the full syn into and behind the partial without any ill efffects. In other words during the "tranfusion" do you open the lines and purge until you see the color of the full syn coming through, or must you fully evacuate the system before introducing the full syn? I guess I could have asked this ??? a little better.

There will be some residue of the old fluid I suppose, even if I do the flush until the fluid becomes clearer. Any problem with them being mixed? I don't know, my guess is probably none, since some of the good folks here just siphon off the reservoir and put Mobil 1, which means there is a good mix of old and new fluid.

The process I briefly described that I did for my wife's car is not the same as changing the oil on motors where oil is first drained, then the motor filled (evacuation). I kind of chased the old fluid until the color is clearer.

And yes you guessed right, I plan to open the line (the return line) to accomplish this.

Im also interested in doing this, my ps pump has been whining on the past few cold mornings we've had. I think i'll just do the Mobil 1 ATF, however I'll talk to my mechanic tomorrow and see what he has to make of this.

Hey Greenscobie86, did you hear from your mechanic if Mobil1 is alright? Thanks.

Unfourtunately I didnt get to go this past Friday(actually I'm overdue for an oil change by 150miles! lol) Hopefully I'll get to go next Friday and see what they recommend. I guess according to PaulC it should be fine. Now that I think about it, Im almost sure the mechanic will tell me that you cannot use what isn't supposed to be used or some stuff like that.
Anyways I'll see if I can get to the place on Friday and get some info.

I'm not the last word on anything; I can only tell you that I perfomed the drain/fill of the reservoir abot one year and 10,000 miles ago and the pump quieted down, steering is fine, no leaks or other symptoms of Mobil 1/seal incompatability. Your experience may differ.
