I have a 94 Ranger 4.0 V6. I recently put a cold air on it, i have the intake tube infront of the duct for the stock airbox so i am getting fresh air from the outside. What my question is, this only happens from time to time that when i start it up my idle is up to 2,000 rpms and i can hear the intake sucking air so i don't know if my throttle is sticking open, i adjusted the throttle to factory so i can get the idle of 500 rpms and this morning when i started it up it was fine, but i started it up on my way back home and it did it. I cleaned out the throttle body cause i thought maybe it was sticking open. So does anyone have any ideas why it does this? Is this normal?
well i started it back up after school and it did it again but i shut it off and restarted it and it idled normal. It also did it when i floored it hard and when i slowed down my rpm's were at 1500 and im usually at 500 when im stopped so does anyone have any ideas? Again i put a cold air intake on it, i figured im gonna put the stock tube back on there with the filter until i can figure out the problem cause i don't like driving idle at 25 mph.

Seems strange.. Is the air/fuel mixture affected in any way? Watch out if it's running lean. If you do find it's lean, I would drive it at an absolute minimum until the issue is solved.
The idle speed on a 94 Ranger 4.0 is not adjustable; it's controlled by the electronic engine management system. The setting you probably fiddled with is the default setting which is used in the event of a malfunction. This somewhat hidden adjustment is up by the butterfly valve. If there is no problem, this limp mode feature will never be needed/used in the life of the vehicle. To restore the setting to where it belongs, try removing the IAC solenoid wiring connector with the engine running and set the noted adjustment to about 600 rpm on a warm engine and equipped with a 5 spd manual tranny. When done, shut it off and pull the battery cable for about 15 minutes then reconnect; this will clear the code that you will set. Restart and let it idle for about 5 minutes before driving to relearn idle, as noted in the owners manual. As for the other issue, maybe try going back to stock and see what happens. I played around with the intake on my old/former 94; there were no noticable gains found other than a bunch of noise.

Well the only thing I have done was put a new air intake tube on and when i started it up the idle was very high, i adjusted the throttle control, today i put the stock intake tube back on i haven't adjusted the throttle back to the original position but im hoping the tube is what the problem was. When you say remove the IAC solenoid connector is that the wire that goes from the IAC Valve to the other plug?
Well i did what you said, i ran the truck and i unhooked the IAC and ran it, shut it off unhooked the battery for about 20 minutes i even cleaned the IAC Valve out, so far it seems fine, but the problem doesn't happen all the time. If it is still doing it do you recommend i purchase a new IAC valve? I have been told those don't last too long and my truck has a 175,000 miles on it and i think that might be the original one on there.
