I've got a 302 in my 51 F1 with Speedway tight fit 'block hugger' headers. I'm using the stock 'mini' starter from later model mustangs but it is only 1/8" from the header flange on the end. The two times I've had it running for several minutes, the starter wouldn't work again (it just spins and won't actually turn the engine over). I'm assuming this is because it got too hot. After the first time, I wrapped the header with an insulator but as mentioned above, there's barely enough room to get anything between them.
I've called Speedway to see if they have a starter that is shorter- I need to verify the number of teeth on my flywheel to see if they have one that will work....
Hi Blatherskite,
I used to have a '84 Mustang with a 351 and ran into the same problem. The only thing I could find that helped was a insluating wrap for the starter itself. I believe that I got it from Summit and it was some sort of fiber material on the inside and reflective aluminium on the outside. It's not real thick but it worked better than the header wrap.
Hi Blatherskite
I've got a 289 in my 49 ford with Patriot thght tuck headers with Powermaster
short starter . The header flange is about 1/4'' from the starter with no problem. Maybe the starter is bad.
It could be a bad starter but I thought it was odd to have two go bad that quickly - and both were fine for several starts that had short run times(no real heat build-up) but then both went bad the first time it ran for awhile.....
Do you know how long your starter is from the bellhousing forward - or would you measure it for me?
