98 Ranger 4.0 4wd
I have a whinning noise in the front end while the truck is rolling. Mr Tire tells me that the calipers are not releasing. My question is that when I step on the brakes the noise doesn't stop, if it is the brakes shouldn't the pressure stop the noise?
Could the noise have something to do with the 4wd?
Yeah your brakes would get weaker quite a bit faster, less acceleration, and the burning smell Ken mentioned. You might wanna jack the truck up, start it, hit and release the brakes a few times, and see if you can spin the tires freely still.
This is a common problem in 4x4s of that era. Its a squeal, from the from end, its pretty consistent throughout the speeds, independent of gear or brake.
The rumour is that it is caused by your hubs getting dry and/or the "half shaft excluder seals getting dry and rubbing. I think there is a TSB on it.
Mines been doing it on and off for 2 years, with no ill effects.
I find it's worst when the temp is around 15-20C (70ish), cool fall or spring weather.
It seems ot get better temporarily if you drive with your 4x4 on.. so go mudding for a day or two.
I had that problem. I got scared, because I thought it was metal on metal. Mine might be different then yours, but what I did was sprayed the tires and inside of the tires completely with water high pressure and low pressure. Drive it around for a little bit and see if it goes away. I thought I was going to have to spend a ton of money, but it ended up being really simple.
Hope it works
