Dana 44 closed knuckle parts question and what lube to use

I just pulled aparts my D44 closed knuckle from my 73 F250 4x4. One seal (around the large ball) was completely wasted and the upper and lower king pin bearings were shot. It was filled with little grease and mostly dirt and sand.

I thought these things were supposed to be filled with 80w-90 gear oil not grease.

Anyways, where do you buy these seals at, the ones that bolt onto the outside around the large ball? Would Napa have them or is this some special order thing? Anyone have a part number? Any clue as to how much they cost?

What about the bearings, they look common, where would I find these at?

I've tried a local autozone and they didn't even have it listed.

What about lube? Is is safe to run grease or should I be running 80w oil?

Thanks, KarlJay.

Karljay....

what you do on the lube for these is mix 80/90 and wheel bearing grease togather and it works real good. (keeps the leaks down). the felts are hard to find, napa says dealer item. but depending on what size you have they might not be able to get them. the bearings you can get at napa. I will try and dig up my info on mine when I whent thru my axle a year ago.

I got the Seals for my '70 from the local parts place.
They wernt listed under the ford truck section in the parts book, but we found them listed for an early '70's Jeep Wagoneer. Dana 44's came under quite a few Jeeps and I think a few Mopars
Cost was about $40 CDN each for them.

I tried mixing grease and oil together too, but the king pin bearings went out a week later.... could it have been the grease in there. After that i replaced the seals and fixed it right.
it still leaks a bit, but i just fill it at every oil change.

Fordzilla...

it wasn't the grease that caused bearing failure, I packed mine bearings with grease before I installed them. The second biggest cause of bearing failure on these (second to lack of lube) is not being shimed properly! alot of guys will put all new bearings and cups and then throw it back togather with the same shims it had or not at all. just a thought.

some xtra info...
if you have a dana 44hd what do you do for seals and felts, I remember now after reading thru my records that I reused my old ones because nobody could get them where I was. they are much larger than the "normal" ones. someone sugjested a place that sells driveline parts like Six Flags, or Six States or something like that, is able to get them.

Well, after a few calls, I found them at a few local places. One wanted $36 each and then finally I found them for $12.21

The $12 kit came with rubber seal, felt seal, metal back plates, and new bolts!

the guy suggested using marine grease and packing them full. Also, he suggested some RTV on the ball to fill up the pits.

Got the upper/lower bearings for $11 and race for $4. Napa wanted about 29 & 15 for the same thing. It pays to shop around!

Hey guys, I know this is an old forum, I recently picked up a 74 with the closed knuckle d44, here's the link to a rebuild kit. Decent deal for bearings and all the seals. Closed Knuckle Front End Parts
