Art, do you have any specific questions? From what I've read, there shouldn't be any problem finding enough space for the 300. There are always the engine (and transmission?) mounts plus various tubes/wiring to be rerouted. Nothing that would be a real show-stopper I wouldn't think.

the seventies fords with the 300 6 share the same motor towers with the FEs, but they're moved to a different set of bolt holes. I dunno if they sell motor mount kits for the 48 to put an FE in, but that might give ya some ideas to chew on. Not done this myself but anything is possible. They originally came with inline flathead sixes too.

Look in Gallery for how it was done on my '58 M-100 & as far as I was able to find no kit exists.

I saw one on Ebay recently. It showed the engine and it was a 240-300 series with a C4.

I say go for it!! the 300 is a great engine and it should fit the 49 no probs. Yes, you will have to fab your own mounts but then again you will have to fab mounts no matter what you install

good luck

here's food for thought. According to my books, the flathead inline 6 had more hp than the flathead 8 in f1's.

I'd do it, I have heard the 300 I-6 called the best engine Ford ever built.

I was on a post awhile back and we had this discussion, I was asking about putting one in my 51 F1, I have looked for it but just can't find it. Conculsion was the 300 is too long in length and additional depth would be required in the firewall to get it to fit. The radiator can't go far enough forward due to the hood nose width. But I'm an optimist I believe almost any swap can be accomplished if you want to do it bad enough. Myself I look for the easy way out, which usually winds up being a dark side install.
