my son has a 2000 F-150 that has the ABS light on. is there maybe a general problem that can easily be checked that may be causing this?

Normally the rear speed sensor goes out on these, the dealer has a cpu they can put on it to tell for sure. My dealer cost 125.00 to check others cost as low as 25.00. The sensor only cost about 20.00 you could try or have it checked. There can also be opther problems depending if you have 4 wheel abs or just 2 wheel abs. Hate to have you waste your money.

I appreciate you taking time to respond on the ABS light problem I mentioned, Lance. Is the sensor you mention easy to locate and replace? If it's only about$20, maybe I'll just have my son replace it and see if that takes care of it.

Yes it is easy to replace - its on the center of the rear differential - usually towards the top. If it is rear wheel ABS only, that is more than likely the problem. Otherwise, it will have to be scanned with an ABS capable scan tool. The sensor must the bought from the dealer.

Yes just call and tell them you would like a price on the ABS sensor on the rear differential - its usually in the $20-$30 range - usually it costs a minimum of $45 to get the ABS system diagnosed.

The rear sensor is NOT exclusive to the Ford store.

Borg-Warner ABS111 of about $17 from O'Reilly's.

I keep hearing about a O'Reillys, I have never heard of that auto ports store before. Is it in the us and if it is what part. I am in Colorado and there is no such animal here. They seem to have parts only the dealer carries around here. any info on this.

lance,...i just went on the internet and did a google and found that there is a site called oreillyauto.com that you can go to. i didn't check, but i'm sure it has locations of stores listed.

You might want to first check and clean the plugs and wiring. I often find that the ABS goes out when contacts are bad. Replacing sensors solves this too, but may be unnecessary.

 

Yea checked the internet all the stores are located east really middle east. None in Co. But I could become a memeber and order over the net. ok if the prices are right and have the time.

Sorry to get off the subject

That rear sensor is a magnetic sensor that works off of pulses from the Diff. when they go bad they are bad. I tried to clean mine to no availe, now if you have a sensor checker you can verify if the sensor is bad or not.

believe it or not, lance,...just before i got an email notice that you had responded to the site, i got a call from my son, ( with the abs light problem..) and he just cut a deal on a 2005 F-150. ( what some guys won't use as an excuse to get a new truck..)(smile) he has been trying to deal for about a week.( not because of the abs light, though), and finally got em down to where he could do the deal, i guess. i ask him wasn't he suppose to be working, ( he's a surveyor..), and he said the salesman just called his cellphone and ok'd his deal. now he has a newer truck then ol dad. his old truck has 92,000 mi. on it, and he thought it would be a good time to deal it for a new one, ( which with all the incentives on right now...and before his turned 100,000 mi.) he's probably right. must be nice to be single with no big bills. ( mortgage, etc..)
so,...guess he won't be messing with the abs light problem. ( the salesman said it didn't matter that it was on and wouldn't affect the deal..) you think he'll let ol dad drive his new truck soon? (smile)
