picked up a 66

I bought a 66 f100 today. I was going to buy it just for the motor, but decided that the body is in to good of shape to junk.

I ended up paying $150 for it.

its a different bird than my 86 F150. But its pretty much the same as my 66 and 67 mustang.

I found no cancer on it, I did the tap test and found no bondo. The motor is a mid 70's 302 with a C4 behind it. It starts the first crank and does not smoke or knock.

It does need a paint job, a right fender, and a windshield. Plus some various interior items.

Man! You really scored bigtime!!! That is almost unbelievable! Were talking a not only rust, but Bondo free truck with a great running engine, needing only cosmetic items to be pretty much right. You have got to be joking! Was somebody dying with no family to leave the thing to? Were they going to prison for life? More realisticly, was it an American who's long term employment went overseas and they are now forced to sell, EVERYTHING?

Tell us more. Is it Custom Cab? Overdrive? Got any pix?

I am working on pix.

Apparently the previous owner got into some trouble with driving to fast, or intoxicated. He lost his liscense and had to move to a town north of me so he would be closer to his work. He had been taking the bus but its around and hour drive, and stops running after a certain time.

since he did not have a liscense he could not drive the truck up there. So it sat in his previous driveway with his landlord getting ticked. I emailed him and he dropped the price to 150 down from 300.

Its defianntly not beautifu, and needs some work. but I did the ice pick test and crawled around underneath and could not find any rust.

I dont know squat about these trucks. But the emblems say twin I beam, and it appears to be a short bed. Its not a step side.

What is a custom cab? It does have a button above the key switch, but the Previous owner lost the keys. So I hotwired it through the solenoid.

the hood has a fairly big dent in it also.

Are there any aftermarket reopop vendors for these trucks?

Only a/m hood available is fiberglass, and it's mondo expensive.
There are several a/m vendors. Aside from this site, which has a somewhat limited inventory, there is Dennis Carpenter, Carolina Classics, LMC and a few others.
Easiest way to spot a Custom Cab is the 'sweep' speedo instead of the round one.
Your VIN number tag has all the codes on it to tell you exactly what it had when it was new (including engine, which wasn't a 302!).

I am guessing that a sweep speedo is the long one, where the needle goes across it.

I have that. but there is no other trim.

Today I pulled it into the driveway, and noticed the big "custom cab" emblem on the side.

I will see if I can dig up a camera tonight.

You are making no friends here telling us about the CC emblem you didn't even see when you bought a decent truck for $150!!!! Just jokeing....

This experience is what I always refer to when someone is about embark on a major painful restoration of an old rusted out, banged up truck. Don't do it. There are decent trucks out there, just cosmetically a lot of them look poor and people end up selling them cheap.

But you have to be lucky or patient -- or best of all both.....

even If it is a rust bucket, I would of payed that much for a running motor and transmission.

I could probably part the trucks trim out and make enough for it to be worth it.

I went and got the title sorted out today. I also paid the guy.

But I didnt have a chance to get pics. I fired it up and gout it out of the street and into my driveway so i could work on it.

now I need to figure out the wiring, Since the brake lights and turn signals are not working. Once I get those fixed I can drive it.

although It need some updating. it still has the non power drum brakes, and the original power steering.

The power steering has the 60's over assist feel to it. I removed it from my mustang because I couldnt really feel the road when I drove. I am pretty stoked.

He got a power steering too .......... I say he's on his own with the wiring.

Pics -- we want pics. You need a wiring diagram too -- they sell them here. Someone could scan them for you, but they are not so terribly expensive.

Good luck......

what are some good aftermarket dealers? I think I got spoiled with my mustang. If I only had the roof and B posts I could rebuild an entire car.

The wiring couldnt be to difficult. (electical problems suck!)

Dennis Carpenter, LMC, Mac's, Sacramento, Classic Car Parts out of Oklahoma city.

DC has the best rep, usually demands the best prices. Others are more variable.

There are some things here, but a catalog in good old printed form is nice.
