what four speed manual do i have?
1987 f-150 four speed with four being over drive. straight six motor. only thing i can see on the sides that might help id it is the ford name, which must mean it is a ford made? . It has no drain plug, the fill plug is on the passenger side. the bell housing is removeable. Looks like the case is solid and the back, where the tail shaft attaches, unbolts off. Any idea what trans this might be? I cant find anything on this site that is even remotely close. So anybody know? Are these good trans? Reliable and strong? any info appreciated..

Aluminum casing? Is there an ID tag on it anywhere with numbers you could post so that someone cold possibly check for you? Take a look at these links:

If it's like mine was, (the t-170), I think the consensus is that there are definitely stonger units out there (ie, t18, np435). I used it for some occasional hauling and it worked for me. I liked having the OD for the highway too. I suppose it depends on what you use the truck for.

Side mounted linkage, iron case? Or aluminum case, internal linkage?
These were patterned after the old top loader, but are weaker. Made by Tremec for Ford.
Some info here. Good flat land, light load trans due to the major gap between 2nd and 3rd.
