The in tank has 209,000 and is still pumping. The sending unit quit long ago though. 1988 EB Bronco - 302 - AOD - 3.55 Lim Slip 8.8- Manual Hubs and Transfer Case - BFG 32/11.5 AT - 209,000 miles
I'm not sure how good '88 pumps are, but I took mine apart for a postmortem, and the failure was caused by a wearout. There was that segmented copper ring where the brushes connect, and in 2 or 3 segments, the copper was completely gone. I was lucky enough that this happened like 3 - 4 miles from home, and because of my AAA membership, the tow didn't even cost me dime. But I just came back from a 4000 miles crosscountry journey a week before that, and at some points we were out in the boonies.
im replaceing mine its got around 190k on it. its getting replaced with a complete ford unit for $162. my float/sender were shot was the main reason for replacement. but i figure the work it took me to get the damn thing out and the tank droped i dont want do this work again.
I replaced mine at about 175K... it was still working but dying... I was getting a check engine light occasionally because it was running lean. In-tank pump... I was told to drop the tank but I decided it was easier to remove the bed. took about an hour to replace myself.
Would have taken less time but I broke my sending unit and had to buy another.
