transmission is failing

My transmission is starting to give out, and ive started looking at the internet sites to look for a new one. What are some things that i need to look for when buying a new one. Should i go and get mine rebuilt, or should i buy a previously rebuilt one. any help would be appreicated.

how do you know its going out? have you pulled the tranny codes? have you tried a new filter and fluid? tell us whats going on first. might be something cheaper then a rebuilt e4od those are very very expensive

as i was driving down the road i heard a grinding noise and then the engine rpms went way up, because i was on the gas, and there was no more power to the wheels. the shifter just glided through the positions on the indicator and wouldnt catch at any position. i shifted into park and then sat for a minute and then i tried to shift it into gear again. it only locked into the spot for low(1). as i was driving i tried to shift into normal drive and it worked. when i was parking at the house, i shifted from reverse to drive and the lever stuck but again no power was going to the wheels...i hope that helps thanks

i must just be a drama queen...i found out that there was nothing wrong, no codes. so i looked under the floor mat and found a screw that apparently had fallen out. i looked and looked for a place it came from and i found a hole where the lever meets what looks like a shock?????(something under the steering column... any way whith once screw in and one out, every thing was offset. as soon as i can get my hands on a six point star screw driver bit, i will be able to put it back in and check things out. sorry about not explaining....but i kind of feel stupid
