Talking GAs Mileage

I have never driven it until it dies but i do drive it on empty msot of hte time, i can go, for sure, about twenty miles befor having to really pump gas, another way to tell is if i have the MPG meter i can go about 10 miles after it reaches 0 Miles left.

guess i am really gonna have to drive it untill it dies jsut to see.

If you REALLY want to find out, bring a 5 gallon gas can with you and REALLY find out. I know my light comes on with about 5 gallons left in the tank. 29 gal tank, light comes on, put in 24 gals.

That doesn't mean you have 5 gallons left.

There is about a 4 gallon air-bubble at the top of the tank. The overflow tube coming back from the tank to the filler neck is sitting down from the top of the tank about 4 gallons worth. In previous years on this site, people were modifying that tube to get more gas into the tank.

I've done the same thing, run until the light comes on, go a little further, and I can get 25 gallons into it. If I sit there and baby the nozzle for 5 minutes, I can get 27 or even more into it depending on how long I want to mess with it

I have a 38 gallon tank in my 99 super duty. No need to put more gas in it that's for sure. It's expensive to fill up this puppy!

Ahhhh, that is definitely nice to know. Although, I rarely ever let my tank get that low unless I'm doing some long distance traveling. I'm one of those that when it hits 1/4 tank, I'm filling up.

Personally, I never let the tank get that low. But I can ask my wife - she seems to be an expert at low/no gas calculations!

Oh, don't get me started with that. Mine is the champ of the fuel light fill-ups.

I run every tank down to where the light comes on... my reasons are this:

Everytime you leave a little gas in the tank and fillup again, you are mixing new gas with old. As time goes on, there is a certain percentage (quite small) that is more than a year, two, three, years old! People who fillup at 1/2 a tank get gas that is like a nuclear half-life.

Say you fill it at 1/2 a tank every week for 6 months. That's 24 weeks. So, at the end of the 6 months, you still have 1/16millionth left of 6 month old gas. I know, that doesn't sound like a lot...

However, every tank I've ever looked in that came from a person who kept it filled was dirty on the bottom. Anyone who regularly ran it down below 1/4, or until the light comes on, it was clean. No lie. To me, that means even that miniscule portion of gas left after 1/2 tank fillups (or 1/4) is dropping out and turning to varnish/crud.

And, I don't buy the theory of sucking up the crud from the bottom of the tank by letting it run down to near empty. That crud is there in the bottom, the pickup is in the bottom, if it's going to pickup the crud, it'll do it full or empty.

My wife and I are just the opposite. Anything below 1/4 of a tank and she's wigged. I drove 50-ish miles once in her hot rod Contour coming back from Searspoint one night with the fuel light on. I thought she was going to blow an artery. To this day she reminds me of that, along with a warning to never repeat it.

I have noticed when my tank is low that parking nose down somewhere prevents my truck from starting. So I do try and keep the tank at 1/8 or above.

I try not to let it hit the fuel light. I guess I just hate being caught short on anything. Especially being that my second half of the fuel gauge goes pretty fast compared to the first half.
