The original lasted 21 years. I've gone through three since. They're loud and do not last long.
I am unable to find new pumps.
Know of any?
Or even high quality rebuilds?
I also just got one from advanced auto (for a '71) the one here has a price policy that they will meet any price and beat it by 5%. Worth making a couple phone calls to check it out. My old 71 pump looked fine, but when hooked up, it was not pumping any fluid thru any of the hoses...They are cheap enough to just get a rebuilt one and be done with it...
If you have had a couple of failures with rebuilds, make sure that you read the correct way to bleed and flush the system, in a service manuel. (Library, or this site has a manuel on CD.) You can usually get away with just bolting one on, filling it with fluid, and drive. But the Ford systems can hold alot of air in them and need to be bled properly. Also. Make sure you put a filter in line so that any metal particles don't circulate through the system. (Hastings makes a good trans filter that works great for P/S also).
What is it about P/S Pumps in 77 F150 4x4? I bought my truck from
my boss 2yrs. ago and since then I have had to replace 3 of them.
He was real good about keeping receipts and looking thru them I see
he had replaced 5 of them in 2 1/2 yrs.
I was constantly changing out the P/S pump on my '76 390, until dad brought home a pump off something like an 88 superduty and I never had a problem with it.
The only modifications I had to do was cut the bracket out with a torch so the filler neck would clear it. Other than that it bolted right up and used the same pulley and belt. I also had to modify the pressure line.
The tin can style I had on mine would pretty muck explode all of it's internals every time I had the motor up around 6500rpm.
First off, -why are you winding a 460 (if your handle is correct) to 6500 rpm?
If you need those rpm's I hope you are using a 302. Also for those rpm's run a smaller crankshaft pulley, a larger pump pulley or both.
Another thing guys, check out the PS service thread in the Garage forum and use a return line filter. Ford TSB's say a filter is required whenever a PS system is serviced.
