Idle is fine, but driving causes the temperature gage to peg. I slow down and the temperature goes back down. In the past I have had cars do this when the fan clutch goes out, but I don't see a problem with this one. I am going to change the thermostat tonigt to make sure that is not the problem.
Well I'll tell you what. It was easier to replace the thermostat then the belt. The biggest problem was finding an 'O'ring. Had to go to the dealer and pay $15 for it. That was more than I paid for the thermostat.
You didn't say if the engine was ACTUALLY overheating you just state that the guage is pegged to the high end. Check the coolant temperature sending unit and see if it is functioning properly.
I assume if steam is flying out of your rad that you actually have a real issue but it may be a failing sensor.
Oh, the thermostat fixed it. Needle was pegged and the 'Check Gauge' light was on. The air conditioner didn't work either. I still think it was strange that it cooled down when idling and got hotter when moving.
