I am very surprised my 2001 Expedition has developed a power steering leak as determined by my local Ford Garage. Does anyone know if this is common at 135,000. . I have had Fords last much longer with no PS pump problems at all. You input is appreciated.
Hi and thanks for the reply. . .the mechanic at the Ford Garage did not specify a location for the leak in the power steering pump. . but I can see fluid has been sprayed upward to the engine. . according to the mechanic, the power steering pump is leaking and needs to be replaced. . . $375 labor and parts. .
I noticed a small drip at the hose connection at the bottom which prompted my visit to the garage for further investigation.
Wow, $375 is 100+ gallons of gas (no pun intended).
I just flush my wife's V70 steering using Mobil 1 ATF since it was never done in 8 years, and now it's all pink.
I might do the same for our XP before winter comes, hopefully a preventive maintenance...
Is Ford power steering the thing to use? I read about a member that used Royal Purple Synth that somehow made the operation quiter (Lord knows how noisy the power steering of 1st Gen XP is). And what of this additive? Is it a Ford product?
Any tip on power steering flush will be appreciated.

That's a bargain compared to the $520 I was quoted today at the stealership... How hard is replacing the power steering pump myself? I have a '99 Navigator.
