My 1989 F250 with 7.5 liter EFI engine has 110K miles. It idles fine when in drive or other gear but slows nearly to a stall when in neutral. The screw that looks like it should be an idle adjustment is long and headless. Is there a special tool for adjusting it or is there another way to do it?
You can't adjust the idle speed. If the motor wants to stall at idle, you have to figure out why that's happening. Probable causes are a dirty throttle body, dirty IAC valve, or a bad TPS. Have you pulled the codes? This can also help you nail down the problem.
Yeppers try cleaning the throttle plates , get some spray carb cleaner an a ole tooth brush, An the IAC , pull it off spray it out till fairly clean , an spray some in the holes on the motor where the IAC bolts down , you should be good to go . Something else to think about a lil later on is getting the fuel Injectors flushed , makes a world of diff in how it runs , Dont waste your time or money on that stuff you pour in your tank If they aint been cleaned in awhile ,, after you get them cleaned then you can add the tank stuff to help keep them clean !!
