Detroit Locker or Powertrax F-250 1976

I need more traction in my truck F-250 Camper Special 2 wd with 460. I do lots with this truck and have a steep driveway that can be a pain in the winter. Trying to decide between Detroit Locker andPowerTrax for it. I will want to out in myself but have never worked on a diff before. Any advice which one to go with would be great.

Since it's a 2wd and it wouldn't have 36" or larger tires going threw mud alot, I'd say the PowerTralock right if that's what your talking about) would be the easyest to install yourself as long as your diff is a open differeintial to start with. It would be the cheapest choice, and you could install it your self, and it would do everything you needed it to pretty easilly.

Have you considered the Detroit True Trac yes its a limited slip but its a all gear limited slip its more durable than the clutch type units. I looked into lockers for my 89 F-450 the Detroit locker was the most expensive the Lock Right was quite abit cheaper. The Lock Right would probably work in your situation as you are 2wd and your looking for extra traction like I'am. You probably run into traction problems with a empty truck like I do.

What type/brand/size tires are you running now ?

If you are running Lt-235/85R16 rubber you can try BFG Commercial Traction T/A they will help in the traction department. If your still running the 16.5 wheels turf them find youself some 16s from a 1980s truck as 16.5 tires are hard to find in the 8.25-R16.5 of 9.25-R16.5.

I assume your truck has a Dana 60 rear axle or is it a custom ordered truck with a Dana 70 ?

One thing to consider about these trucks is the axle shaft slpine count you may have troubles finding a Detroit locker to match. The Lock Right has many applications listed.

Good Luck

For simplicity's sake and normal sized tires, go for the powertrax. half the price of a detroit and you can instal it yourself very easily.

You can check the splines on your axles very easily, it'll either be 16 or 30 spline for your truck.

Since you said it was 2wd and driven in the winter I would Limited slip it, ls. is alittle more daily driver frendly.

It may be alittle more friendly, but the Lock Right is suposed to preform good threw curves, and let the other wheel go further that the inner wheel so you don't get that tire chirp.
The mechanical lockers perform like a open or limited slip until a curtan amount of torque is apllied to lock it up.

I'm running dual lock rights, and so far no problems (i run them in my mudders, with 35x16 boggers, dana 60 front and 10.25rear). As far as them disengaging going around corners, just let of the gas and they will unlock by their design (the crosspin when under load keeps the lock right engaged, when not under load the crosspin allows the internal springs of the lock right to sperate it and allow it to disengage).

But yeah for you the powertrax is the best way to go, plus it only takes about an hour or so to install.

69 F-250 Detroit or PowerTrax

This is a great thread... would you recommend the same for a '69 F-250 Camper Special as well. Just looking for a little more traction. Right now, in the snow or wet grass (back yard) it will just sit and spin.

The lock right is your best choice, because it's cheaper, strong enough to with stand what you'll be using it for, and you can install it your self.

If you run 36 + tires and you abuse your rig, A detroit is the way to go even though it is more expensive.
