I remember redoing them on a 56 years ago. I learned four things: #1 I would have them done at a machine shop. #2 A lot of new curse words. #3 Even more new curse words. #4 Having new ones make a huge difference. If you have the correct tools to do them it helps but I would suggest a good machine shop, the cost would be worth it. Good Luck........

I took mine to the local NAPA machine shop, where I was assured that they had done them regularly, and used an adjustable reamer to do them. I got them back with a little more slop than I'd like. Cost was only $20 each (I had put the new bushings in already).

By the way, as I recall you have to align the holes in the bushings with the grease passages in the spindle?

Take it to a machine shop to be reamed. It only cost me $35 for both and when you install the bushing do like Albuq F-1 says and be sure the grease channels are aligned with the fittings. I seem to remember the point of the triangle goes to the top.

Does anybody know the size of the reamer needed for my '48'. I need to get this done by next Friday (9th) for when I race, but my dad is wanting to wait until after when we have more time. I don't want to wait, I want it done now!

I strongly suggest that you take your front axle to a front end shop that has a Sunnen reamer or similar for doing kingpins. You really want them to fit nice and tight. Any slop will just contribute to poor steering.

They did it pretty quick and it wasn't that much.

Cheers,

HT32BSX115, I would take it to a shop except for a few reasons. 1. Can't afford to. 2. I just finished taking machine shop at Vo-Tech so I understand tight tolerances and the processes of machining. 3. My dad has a buddy with a spindle reamer but he is a good 50-60 miles away and gas is outrageous. 4. Finally if I know the reamer size I can have my old Vo-Tech instructor do it.

Thanks,

Just mic the new pin and add the clearance for a light press fit. Your instructor should surely be able to handle that.
