First post here, just baught my first Ford. Its a 97 F-250 with the 5.4 V8 and the guy selling it told me the air compressor was in need of repair. Now I am worrying that this is going to cost me more than I thought. I don't know much about mechanics of trucks but I don't want to let this go for fear of the fan belt burning out and breaking. Anyone make similar repairs, what did it cost you?

 

Are you going to do it yourself or have a shop do it?

 

I am not very well equiped in tools or knowledge so I will probably have a shop do it unless it sounds really simple.

 

Take it to a reputable shop for diagnosis and a written estimate.

It appears that, by your own admission, you are not equipped to perform this work or to analyze what work needs to be done.

It would help the readers here if you actually described the exact details of the failure. Perhaps it is the compressor, perhaps it is something else. A compressor swap, if required, is not a DIY project for someone who does not have an understanding of what it takes to perform it sucessfully.

I described it in much more detail in another thread, I actually mistakenly placed this in the wrong thread. noob. Regardless, I was ultimatly right in my assumption that it was the bearing and pully assembly, something I would not undertake myself and I did not know it those parts could be replaced with out replacing the whole compressor. Originally I was quoted $1500 to have it fixed and then decided to ask around. A Ford dealership replaced the parts for $312. Sorry again about starting the thread in the wrong category.

 

I replaced my compressor and accumulator on my 99 F350, a few months ago. I ordered the parts from an Ebay store, and they cost $172 for the compressor, and $68 for the Drier.
