Another loadomatic question
Does the loadomatic still have some sort of mechanical plate under the plate that the points are mounted to? I don't want to install a later dizzy if I already have one! This is what happens when you buy someone else's project!!
With the Lodomatic you can see the vacuum arm and its pivot plate. The diagphram unit does not look like the later version which was used on all succeeding Ford engine families.
The 57 and later unit has a seperate mechanical plate which is barely visible if you are trying to see when it is still in the truck. Another way to check is with a mirror on a flexible handle; try and get the part # off the side of the housing.
And finally the Lodomatic will work only with the 3 bolt Holley carb with the venturi vacuum port on the rear of the bowl. If you have a later intake and a 4 bolt base 2 bbl carb OR if the venturi port has been blocked and vacuum is from a fitting on the manifold then you have a later dizzy.
The carb that was on the truck when I first got it did have that venturi vaccum port stopped up, but I thought it was just carbon. When I couldn't get it drilled out, I installed another carb that came with the truck. I did buy some new points and condenser and installed them. That's when I noticed the flex plate under the plate the points are mounted. I just don't want to buy something that has already been done.
I had a Load-O-matic in my 55.
I removed it and installed a much later distributor and installed a Pertronix unit too.
If you do that you have to ensure that you either use the 13 tooth gear from the Load-O-Matic on the newer distributor or if you're lucky like I was it'll already have a 14 tooth gear on it. You'll also have to replace the oil pump and drive shaft since they are different. I am selling the old Load-O-Matic on ebay complete with oil pump and shaft. I really like the Pertronix set up. It's completely trouble free and it's really easy to time the thing now.
Be careful with the Load-O-matic vacuum connection. It has to be connected to the carbureter. Later distributors had a vacuum source directly connected to the manifold.
The Load-O-Matic doesn't have the quick vacuum advance capability the later ones have so it doesn't perform as well as the newer ones. It was really easy to swap it out. You might want to get a copy of the Ford 54/55 Shop manual. It's got a pretty good discription of how to adjust the Load-O-Matic
