Hi-Perf. 223 "Is it worth it"

Looked at the cam, intake/carb and exh. options for the 223ci at Clifford Performance. Just not sure if it will be a good bang for the buck option. Not really any HP/TQ numbers advertised to expect. Everything seems to be based on the 300ci which would be much more responsive to power adders I would think.

Any thoughts???

Thanks,

Brad

If you are not worried about originality and are not partial to the motor for somer reason buy the 300 or something else.

my freind put Clifford headers on his 59 a few years ago and it seemed to help a little, I still have a dual carb and three carb manifold (offy) that I will install someday to see what happens, did an old 235 chevy one time with dual carbs and it got better milage, think it may be from better fuel distribution? just a guess..but I wouldn't think the old 223's will make much horsepower no matter how much money you throw at them, run them for what they are...dependable..cheap

Hmmm....Well maybe a 300 is what I want with all the Clifford gear...Mainly I just want Torque as apposed to HP...And I would like it to be a IL-6 as well...Had other ideas of using an extra Tbird Supercoupe Motor I have...But that would be a total PIA to set up proper...Just too much gear and electronix for the end result.

Yea....I saw his project as well as the lengthy thread in regards to it....Its a real beast...I am not really looking to make that much power. Just a Clifford torque cam, headwork, manifold/carb and exh...See what I end up with...

If I decide to go that route I am sure I won't be disappointed...Internals could come later..

223 high lift rockers

Anybody use the high lift rockers(made by barker) that show up on e-bay now and again. Seems like a bargain at $100 for the entire set. Do you need to run stronger or longer springs and push rods ? I'm leaning toward keeping my 223, but will have to go through the entire engine first and thought about having some mild head work done with it. Possibly an offy intake and headers. I figured about $1000 for complete rebuild with offie goodies would be worth it over the hassle of putting in a different engine. Slap me for being dumb, but is a 272/292 a direct bolt in on the 60's, and would the increase in power be worth it vs. a mildly worked 223. I need to take better notes . Am I nuts for thinking I can rework my 223 for $1000. Thanks for all the help.

Performance is not of great importance to me, but I would like to be able to cruise at 65 and have some ooomph left. I would like to use it as a daily driver and will change out my 4:11 gears for something more highway friendly.

Dan

I see those high lift rockers on ebay also. The price of gas lately and future, i think i will keep my 223 but some more power out of it would be nice.

I have never used them on a 223, but did on an old 235 Chevy 6(don't remember what brand they were) using stock springs, and they did help the performance, a gear change is a good idea for the hiway..I run 3:89 with an overdrive, cruise at 65..1950rpm and get 19-20 mpg

Dan..you might be able to do a stock rebuilt for a $1000, but I don't you could with the hipo stuff added in, a 272-292 is an easy swap but more costly than a rebuild on a 223 unless you have a good engine to begin with and only have to buy the stuff for the swap

I've had several trucks over the years with the 300 IL-6 in them, when they are coupled to a 4 speed trans they are great. They make great torque. They aren't the most economical of 6 cylinders out there but they are great engines.

just my 2 cents

On a dyno in doing 342HP at 2500 RPM and pulling 390 Torque at 2300 RPM. is it worth it.. Id say so becouse not every person has a 223 Hipro

Been on 2 diffrent ones.. thought the 1st was goffy.. but thats the #'s This is with lots of modding to the engine.. its been punched ot and stroked. The deck had .065 shaved off and the head had .020 shaved. I had the crank milled and put marine roller bearings in it.. and I had the intake log smooth flowed..
