Been using 5w20, switched to royal purple($$$) 10w30 once, couldn't talk myself into leaving it in for 7000 miles like they say you can so I switched back! I do think I will switch to mobil 1, have had good luck with it in the past.

Switched to Mobil1 0w20 for the winter, can get a tad cold up here north of the border, otherwise its 5w30 synthetic for the hotter months and nothing but motorcraft filters.

I think I will now, same price as the 5w30 synthetic, and the it specifies right on the jug that it is recommended for Fords that require 5w20.

I use 5W30 Mobil Dino and the Motorcraft FL-820S filter

The mods up to and including '01 were 5W-30, those built '02 and newer are the 5W-20 motors... for warranty requirements. Less and less '01s and older are under warranty anymore.

Use what you feel comfortable with, but if your motor is under warranty be very careful your oil meets the manufacturers requirements for viscosity. Ford figures out you've broken the engine do to the wrong oil (and that'll be the first thing they check - R&D loves this) and you can kiss your warranty rights goodbye.

My 01 calls for 5W-20 so maybe 97-2000 call for 5w-30.

Thanks for the catch, Jimmy. I messed up, got to thinking about my dad's truck, then stuck my foot in my mouth.

For '97-'00 F-series Tritons, Ford requires 5W30 if under warranty
For '01 and newer F-series Tritons, Ford requires 5W-20 for warranty validation.

I wasn't sure on the changeover year. I hope that foot didn't tase too bad!!
I have had no problems with the 5w20 Motorcraft oil and filter after 57,000 miles. It uses no oil between changes and the inside is very clean. I tow about 7,000lbs at times in 90+ degree weather with no signs of oil breakdown.
I think that these engines will run forever if properly maintained.
My sister in-law has a 93 Mark VIII with the DOHC 4.6L with about 190,000 miles and it runs like a scaulded dog. I hope my 5.4L runs at least as long. I'll probably have my 01 forever.

Probably, I believe that my Dad's 03 Taurus 3.0 calls for 5W-20 and it's an OHV engine like the 4.2L.
