E4OD- No automatic first

This is a bit of an odd one. The vehicle 1989 F-250 7.3 Diesel, 2wd with an E4OD. This truck was recently purchesed used and while driving it today I noticed it seemed sluggish on take off and was missing a shift (borrowing it from my father for the day). So I put it in manual first on the next red light, lo and behold it was not so sluggish. So I know that the tranny is not automatically downshifting into first when stopped. This is something I would like to remedy pretty quickly. Other than that the tranny works fine and shifts where it is supposed to. On a side note I also loaded a B&M shift kit into the tranny shortly after purchase and as such have not had a chance to drive it in un modded trim, but it also gave me the chance to verify that this is indeed an 89 model tranny. Any aid is much appreciated

Thats a possibility I had considered, but I can't come up with anything that could have caused something like this. A shift kit is a pretty simple thing to install, and this tranny wasn't any different than the few I had gone through back in school. Anyway I guess I'll keep prodding around, if I have to ill drop the pan and check out everything. This is a good lesson in "baselining" to get a before and after If I had done that then I would know for sure if it was the shift kit. Ah well.
