Advice

Hi Everyone
Being new to this site I need some advice. I presently have a 04 6.0 PSD that is beginnning to spend more time at Ford than at my house (the same problems everyone is having). I am thinking of trading it in for the same truck with a V10. I pull a 5th wheel that weighs about 10,000 pounds empty. Can the V10 handle this? The truck I own is a F350-SRW-King Ranch-Long Bed. How do you like the V10 for everyday driving and towing occasionally?

Thanks

The V10 with 4.30 gearing will have more horsepower and approximately 10% less rear-wheel torque. There isn't a lot of difference between the two. My 05 V-10 gets around 11mpg around town and 12.5 highway, empty.

You can run the V10 at 3500RPM all day long, while the diesel will be at 2200 or so.

You can drop out of O/D and get more torque to the ground than the diesel will in O/D.

But you pay for all that high-revvin' at the gas pump.

Welcome to the site RVtraveler, In my PM to you earlier, I forgot to to say that I have a heavy foot and the V10 is too much fun to try and fight gravity so the heavy foot wins.
I can get 12 on my commute if I drive like my 79 year old Dad but I am a 54 year old turned 18 when I get on my V10 so 10 is pretty good when your having fun.
I am sorry to hear you are having problems with your 6.0 PSD. The frustration I suffered with my 04 PSD is something I would not wish on my worst enemy.
Dealing with Ford Assistance was so frustrating I joined BCAA RV program which will tow you to the dealer of your choice and I think the peolpe you call can speak English. With Ford Assistance I am pretty sure I was talking to someone in Pakistan.
I froze waiting for almost 4 hours the last time my 6.0 died on the road.
If you want a V10 you will almost have to order to get what you want. Good luck.

Get the deep 4.30 gears and you'll be tickeled to death with that V-10. As far as fuel economy, expect around 25% less out of the gasser, and gas prices (ethanol) have been running 8 or 9% less than diesel, so you need to figure total vehical cost per mile which takes into account oil/filter changes every 3000 miles for the gasser which will runs me $33 including inspection at the dealership, vs what they charge you for your diesel oil/filter change and inspection. Resale has been better on the diesel. Fun factor with a diesel (how do you measure that?) Sounds like yours hasn't been so much fun!

Hello
I tow daily with my new f350 with v10\auto\4.10 gears

my trailer is about 8k loaded and then I have 1-2000lbs in the bed
so I may have a good comparo for you

Unloaded- as Im sure you have heard- these things are rockets
Loaded up I barely notice anything is behind me around town
the highway is real nice-- I have not had a problem slowing
with a load or on a grade--- In general when towing up the biggest grades
I would see in the green mountains-- she runs around 3500 rpm at 65-70mph
and if you need to go or pass it will then downshift and rocket right up the grade
The v10 is a nice motor but also consider the TS tranny is a huge improvement in capability and performance
On a highway trip I like to put it in tow\haul mode and then set the cruise at about 72-73mph--I find the cruise to be very accurate and helpfull--smooth easy ride -always in the right gear-quiet
My average mpg mixed driving while loaded is now 8
which seems to be a little lower than others report
but I calculate every single fill up by hand

a couple other things if you decide on a new rig --
1. get the Tow Command
2. get the bigger gas tank

g/l

The V 10 is a super motor to tow and drive with. This web site said to get the 4.30s I did and it is one great rig to pull with. The tow command system is also a great system to get for towing this motor is great.
