wiper motor 54
just notice I don't have one, are the 54 wiper motor vacuum or electricaly
opererated. The truck has a 6 volt pos. grd. , how much touble is it to convert to 12 volt neg ground system.. and what would I have to change... At the present time there is a 8 volt battery in my truck any thoughts as to why....
Thanks

Throttle controled wipers ???!!!
My 54 has stock vaccume wiper motor but I control it with the gas pedal on the highway.!!!!
Due to the vaccume source, when traveling at hwy speed the wipers dont have a strong enough pull thru vaccume to make the journey across the windshield....so you briefly lift off the gas pedal a little, in turn slowing the rpm's of the motor and the vaccume comes up and the wipers go across.
My kids think it real cool the way it works!
New rebuild on motor should yield more vaccume power (I hope). If not the electric conversions are about 150.00

Electric Wipers
I had the electric wiper setup in my 51 and it was an option and 6 volt, I also have it in my 53 again an option and 6 volt. In both of these trucks they worked great, by worked great I mean I don't have the 51 any longer. I do however have a 6 volt complete setup, that came from a 51-52, complete with switch, new wire harness and it works.
I don't know it the 51-52 will interchange with 54, but if it does and you need one its for sale.

Earl is right... electrical was an option with the Deluxe Cab in 54. Mine is electric and I am running 12 volts through a resistor.
The motor runs a little fast but in the last 26 years, I've never had to replace the motor and this is a daily driver - the linkage on the other hand is a problem. I'm thinking that due to the motor running a little faster then intended, the bushings on the linkage tend to wear out - I've replaced them many times.
However, I lived for many years in the "snow belt" of the Pacific Northwest and pushed a lot of wet, heavy snow off the widshield. Now that I'm in a little more temperate climent, I plan on just leaving well enough alone - if the linkage problem occurs again, I'll look into slowing the motor down a little more appropritately.

On Topic & a little side-ways...
I have a Chryco Wiper Motor that mounts into the linkage assembly however, the shaft from the motor is a little short to accommodate teh linkage arm bushings as well as the clip to hold it all in place.
Has anyone come up with a "work around" for this ?
