standard transmission to automatic

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Oct-02 AT 06:56 PM (EST)]Im interested in swapping a automatic tranny in place of my four speed. It's a 78 f-150 and was wondering if anyone has done this,if it is difficult and what the price of a automatic tranny might be.

The easiest way to do any swap is to find a donor vehicle to swap parts out of. You may get a good tranny, if not you can get a C6 rebuild for $300-400. A local shop can do it or you can get a reman at a parts store or online. There are differences internally in the number of clutches and the valve body between applications. Get a rebuild appropriate for your application. The C6 also has several different bell housing designs depending on the engine. The donor may also have the steering column you need.

Thanks for using FTE!
